Broken d16y5 valve cover bolts, how do i get them out?
I was torqueing down my valve cover bolts with a torque wrench, its a 1/2 inch drive so i used a 1/2 to 3/8 adapter, i looked up the torque specs for the bolts online and found 89ft/lbs, dont know if this is right because i ended up breaking 2 bolts. you cant take them out because theres nothing to grab onto, they broke inside the hole. btw this was my first time using this torque wrench so when they broke, i thought it was the wrench clicking..... not the bolt. Damn.. I always hate it when i break bolts. especially due to the salty Northeast roads. What i would try first would be an extractor bit. they come with one side for drilling a little hole and the other side is reverse thread to put it out. I would not advise applying any heat to these bolts since it could warp those important components in the head. If the extractor bit doesn't do it, the only thing left is to drill it out and tap it. If that is the case you will have to move up a bolt size and probably drill out the valve cover hole a little bit to compensate. Slow and steady, Good luck!

89ft-lbs?! Jesus, Civic lug nuts are only torqued to 80ft-lbs. 89 INCH-lbs, maybe. Valve cover nuts and bolts should only be torqued down a quarter turn past snug, or if you're OCD about torque specs, i believe the proper torque is only 7ft-lbs.
If the stud is flush with the cylinder head, you're going to have to get yourself an extractor bit and try to get it out. Here's what you need to do:
1.) Take a small drift punch tool and get an indentation started dead center in the broken stud.
2.) Get a very small drill bit and drill a hole a little ways down into the broken stud.
3.) Get a set of left-handed extractor bits from the hardware store and drill into the stud in the reverse (counterclockwise) direction.
If that doesn't work, you're going to need to just drill the whole thing out and put a thread repair coil in there, or retap it to the next larger size stud.

tried the extractor and it didnt work, would i just be able to drill through the broken bolt with a drill bit the size of the original hole and tap it? i cant drill the bolt out because there isnt a opening at the other end

Extractor bit, or an easy out....
you'll have to drill a bit first to get the bit to bite into the snapped off one but it will come out.
Read your manual carefully... I dont know how you got 89ft lbs out of the manual
