I used to live in Okinawa, Japan from 83'-87' and used to own a 72' Mazda Rx-3 Savana with 13B/with Solex Carb and I wanted to bring this Baby back to USA soo bad, but didn't get the knowledge until i got rid of the car. Here is the Deal: this has been done from a soldier friend of mine station @Kadena air base.

Get the car you want to purchase example Civic type-R:

1. get the paper that U are the owner (Japanese Title) and if you are US military station overseas, U can bring this vehical back to USA as Recreational vehicle. This mean OFF ROAD without any mod on certain year on certain vehicle.

Step 2.
This is what you need to change out:
1. Headlight DOT approve
2. Bumper (F/B) must pass 5-15mph crash test
3. Door must pass Re-inforce Bar (don't know what the Thickness is or diameter
4. Winshield DOT Approve another word, If it shattered it should be re-inforce not shatered everywhere
5. Speedometer must show MPH not just KMP
6. Break must also be change out
7. Must past Emission test. Must have cat. converter
8. DOT approve seatbelt

If you are in the military station in Okinawa or Mainland Japan you're in luck. here's why......

All these parts that I've listed above, U can actually buy from any auto zone or any parts dealership and shipped to APO and installed your self, but if you replace out all of these parts, you have to have the paperwork to prove that these part that you replace meet custom and state law. ex. California have a strict emission law than Texas. You get my point.

FYI-Law might have change on custom clearance on certain vehicle to be brought into USA. Check w/ custom first!
