breather on heater core?

breather on heater core?
i took my heater core off. and found that that tube was sitting there...open....might be a breather. OR might be why I over heat hell of quick....
any one know??? and last night coolant was pouring out into my. passanger side. footarea. hell of coolant was pouring out too. im going to be looking after school today.... http://geocities.com/absentmin...e.gif

i had that problem before tooo... changed the heater core and everthing was better, just make sure not to bend the brass pipes cause if you mess those up, you're done!
