i just got my gsr rebuilt with type r pistons stage 3 cams such a such... everything is new.

ive heard all kind of things about "breaking in your engine".

-500 miles babying it. change the oil then blast.
-1000 miles babyin it. change the oil then blast.
-let it get warm then cool a few times and your good to go.
-and, drive it from the beginning the way you are going to drive.

up untill about 200 miles i didnt get it over 4k.
around 250 i popped vtec a couple times and just eased it up around 5k.

ive got 350ish on it now and ive been poppin vtec several times and letting it ease 6ish just stretching its legs.


whats wrong and whats right? anyone know for sure? im ready for a tune NOW, dont wanna get it on the dyno till its good to go.

I only baby it 50 miles after a rebuilt I guess everyone has dif ways.

i just read somewere about a guy who says romp the crap outta it for the first 20 miles to seal the rings, he said the cross hatch pattern on the fresh cyl walls is to help seal the rings and after 20 miles they are gone and what wear was put on the rings is and will always be how well they are sealed, he also said no synthetic till first oil change, i havnt got to drive my rebuild yet, but i already put synthetic in t, so hope its not super important..ill try to find that link, hell it could be the one already posted

edit i believe i should have stated beat the crap outta it if its a stock rebuild like mine, if its not stock get a tune before you put many miles on it, then dog it

Damn OP, I hope you just forgot to mention that you already had it tuned. If not don't drive it anymore until it is.

A lot of guys consider it "broken in" after the dyno tune.

Ive heard of people doing a 15 minute 3,500rpm for breaking in a motor?....this obviously wouldnt do the transmission any good

i had mine broken in on the dyno while getting tuned no light driving there but semi babied it for 200 miles and then blasted it daily

if u have new clutch diff baby for 500 miles i put a new clutch in and was hard on it didnt last 2 months

Everyone has there own way. Some swear you have to go 1k miles and some dont.
I would speak to who ever built the enigne and do what they reccomend.
Me, i would take it easy.
New clutch min of 750 miles, but then again most clutch companys will reccomed 1000.
I wouldnt drive the car untill it's tuned.

I would say get a good basemap with your mods and break it, semi-baby it in with the new clutch minimum of 500-750 miles then tune. I wonder the same since my motor is waiting to be put in my car. So OP, you just add oil and start driving it?

I broke my motor(full NEW forged bottom end, fresh head with new seals and all, all the way to the clutch) and just did about 20-30 hard de-cels @different rpm's/gears. Did this on the way to the dyno(15 miles), Motor/clutch are doing great.

You are supposed to break it in at different RPM. I drove it around for about 1k miles. And only stepped on it a few times. Just make sure you do an oil change after 500 to 1000 miles. And get a magnetic drain plug. Just dont step on it too much in the first 1k miles. And make sure that you use conventional for breaking it in. because synthetic wont break it in right.

its on itbs too. im runnin 450cc injectors, its on s300 that was tuned on my friends type r with the itbs so its deff no where close to what my tune is going to be but it is rich which is better than lean of course. ive got around 400 miles on it now and pretty much showing no mercy.

It's a good idea to have a magnetic drain plug for break in.

i've always done 500miles since as that's what most manufactures recommend on brand new cars. honda recommends 500 miles on all of it's new cars.

I've seen engines broken in after a few minutes on the dyno. Run it for a little bit at different loads and speeds. Rings seat pretty quickly as long as the tune is close and the cylinders aren't washed with fuel.

op-break in the engine according to the builders recommendations like someone said. we all have a different way. i tell people to baby it for the first thousand miles. i actually put the first 150 miles on it doing two test drives. one to mojave then back and i check everything again for small coolant leaks, etc., just in case. then i go on a 100 mile drive to venice beach and back and again i check. then i turn it over to the owner for another 850 miles for them to baby it. but i dont do the basic used engine swaps or anything like that. these are true rebuilds with machined cranks, new bearings, oil pump, connecting rods, machined block, new pistons and wrist pins, water pump, timing components, complete valve job, new valve guides, fuel injectors, etc. true, i probably do too much babying it but it works well for me. ask your builder what they suggest.
