brakes needed repaired, cost me $600 :(
Dropped my car off at Merchants, the told me i needed a brake flush and a new master cylinder. Well when I picked it up, the bill was 608.74!!!!!!!! The mechanic is my fathers good friend so I know I didnt get **** I didnt need, but damn that is expensive. It turns out I needed an entire new brake system, master cylinder, complete rear setup, and new brake lines. They didnt know how I drove when it was in that initial condition. But thank goodness for my 20 dollar coupon!!! hehe.
So all in all I got a entirely new brake system from the ground up, minus front rotors.
Did I get shafted?????
I can do all my motor and body work, but I never feel comfortable dealing with brakes, thats why i let a pro do it, so i can be certian they are in working condition.

Yeah, I believe that you got shafted. You could have done new rotors, pads, ss lines, fluid flush, mc, etc for probably around $300-$350. I'm not sure what a new MC runs off the top of my head.

mc rebuilt can be had for 50-100 bucks
you got the shafted
with that dough I would have got cross drilled rotors with some aem or green pads
and stainless steel lines

you guys are both right, but where it got pricey, was the entire rear system. I mean from top to bottom the rear system is new.

why did your car need all that in the first place? How old is it, and what have you been doing to it? Just curious, seems like alot to replace.

If you were a girl, they would have charged you $800 and told you to put it on your credit card. They ripped you off, but just not as bad. Next time, do it yourself. You could have probably done the whole thing for a buck or two...

Well if you need new rear caliper those are around $90-150 each for rebuilds with core charge deducted. 150x2=$300 + $100 for the MC= $400 + the acutal work. Still seems a little steep to me. I bought a set of used calipers for $100 and they work great. The rebuilds are too $$$. Do i think you got shafted? Probly but i've seen worse. There may be a few other parts in there that were needed as well.

my car needed a new master cyl, which was $109 i believe and i installed it myself...but other then that (and rotors and pads) ive never replaced anything..its all stock. I have like 230,000 miles on the car now...all is great.
Id go back to the place and ask them to show you where the money went.

Damn, so they did work that you did not ask them to do, thats not right, they are supposed to call you if anything else needs to be done to your car. I mean come on they can be doin a tune-up and decide you need new piston rings and just tear into the engine, and you show up to a 2g bill. If I were you I would bring that issue up, besiclly they did work you didnt ask them to.

i dont know if I forgot to mention, they also installed new lines all around, and replaced 2 studs which were broken on the front hubs (one on each side), with and obvious system flush. Im still mad, but at least everything is new.

You people have no clue..
He didn't get 'shafted'.
Figuring he got all new OEM Honda parts (not cheap Korean rebuilds), and he's got an ENTIRE new rear system on both sides, new lines, new OEM MC etc...
The price sounds about right.
You people are trying to compare used, or rebuilt prices on just a FEW of the items he got to brand new OEM stuff w/professional installation.

$600 for the whole brake system?! Sounds CHEAP!!!
Brand new master cylinder and booster alone costs $400.

Re: brakes needed repaired, cost me $600 :( (hot_EG)
To an extent I agree with what is said below, I ended up having the entire rear of my 5gen done, costed a little less than $500. Mine was just the rear replacement with all brand new parts along. It was a overhaul on the brakes along with I believe the master cylinder, I cannot remember offhand exactly, but I remember paying that dang bill.

Re: brakes needed repaired, cost me $600 :( (yusoslo)
Man I went through something very similar. I was driving home late one night in my 91 civic and a fox ran out in front of my car, my g/f screamed and I slammed on the brakes. I thought I had only popped a line so I fixed it the following day (which I had to take off from work unpaid) So the new line didnt do ****, so the following day I take it to my mechanic and he says I need - two wheel cylinders, two new lines, and a master cylinder. Cost me $550.00 Arggggh!

Re: brakes needed repaired, cost me $600 :( (chad)
You didn't get shafted, that's probably about right with new OEM parts and all the labor involved... BUT..
I would be mad if I were in your situation because I would've wanted them to call me first... if they were going to do all that work, why not have them replace the parts with upgraded pieces instead of just OEM stuff. In either case, it's bad practice to just dive into it then hand the customer the bill that they weren't expecting.
