Default Brake problem on 97 Civic

Hi guys,
Just got a call from my girlfriend about a problem with her brakes (97 Honda Civic). They've been working fine all morning but after driving on the freeway a bit she tried to slow down while on an exit ramp and the brake pedal went all the way to the floor but car wouldn't slow down. She used the hand brake to slow the car down but soon after that the brakes seem to work again although she had to stomp on the pedal several times before it started working ok again. She told me that this was the second time this had happened, the first time being last week Thursday.

I've asked he to ditch the car and use mine for now (Yup ... I know ...... but her saftey come first). Does anyone know what could cause these symptoms. I'm thinking that it could be old fluid or possibly air in the brake lines, bad booster or bad master cylinder. I want to take it to brake check for a full brake system check when I get off work but would like to read up on it and know as much as I can first.
Thanks in advance.

Notice any brake fluid leaks around the wheels or on the ground? Sounds like a failing master cylinder to me.

If you arn't leaking fluid it seems like your master cyclinder might be bad. There could be an internal leak which is why the pedal went all the way to the floor and you had to pump to get pressure. If so a mc isn't that much 40-80 buck depending on ABS and size pretty much. Thats jsut my guess though.
