Bought a civic..
I just bought a 1993 Civic EX from my uncle for 200. Ive been reading around and love the great DIY posts. The problem with my car is that it doesnt have a tranny in it atm. I'm planning on doing an auto > manual conversion and was wondering what would be the best tranny to put into my car.. any input is greatly appreciated. basically i bought this bought this car as a project car.. other than that i love my 1st gen acura tl :D.

Well thats what I plan on doing.. but for right now since my TL gets like 17 mpg I'd rather spend a bit of money to do the manual conversion and drive the civic to save money on gas..

youll spend more money doing a auto to manual trans swap than the price of another 1993 manual trans civic... just buy one of that year with the manual trans already in it... then youll even have spare parts from the one you bought off your uncle!

if you are doing a tranny swap and you are looking for a good tranny you could go with a d16y8 tranny they are good stuff and just get a lighter flywheel and you will be good to go

you're looking at 200-400 for a good condition Z6/Y8 tranny out of a 92-00 civic ex. IMO not worth it unless you're doing a hardcore single cam build up. if you're just looking for gas mileage, i'm sure someone will give you their old cx tranny. hell, i know i am giving my motor away when i swap it.

The CX/VX trannys are the longest. They get good mileage if you know how to drive them right; shifting at 2k and knowing when to go above that to keep the engine from lugging. I got 45-50mpg in my old CX with my driving habits.
The tranny from the z6/y8 are shortest next to the SI in the crx si I believe. Either way with a 1.6 you can save gas as long as you don't drive like a jackass or lugg it.
I have a boosted d16y8, lets just say its faster than a GSR swap and cost less.

if you plan on keeping the car and making it a project look for a b16a and swap. very easy to add parts to for going fast. way easier to do and will be more worth you time.

B16's are overpriced and overrated. 160hp and under 5000rpms it'll feel just like a d16. Headers and Intake won't do jack. Except make it louder.

Uh, B16's aren't expensive first off.
You can get a JDM B16 for $2200 with the tranny.

I own 2 car's with B16's in them and I don't have any complaint's.

Re: (SRSLYJDM)
$2200 might not be a lot to you lol, but to me thats a lot. You could get a b18c1 for a little more. H22's also go around $2000 with tranny. Also If you dropped a b18b in a 92-95 you would also have more tq that a b16 which is why you hear people talking about B18b/LS being the cheapest swap for the most power. B16 egs run low - mid 15's while B18b eg's run mid-high 14's.
H22 cost = $2000
B16= $2000
B18c1 GSR= $2100

B18c5= $3500
b18b = $1500

Give or take a couplen hundred depending on who you get them from. B18b's run way waayy cheaper if you get them from somewhere else like a local engine recycler.

Re: (SRSLYJDM)
Yeah I still think thats expensive for a 1.6 when you can get a 1.8 for a little more if not the same price. The only cool thing about the b16 is that you can find parts for it since it was used from basically 1990 in the CRX SIR to the EM1's. But the gsr and ls both have the same numbers in aftermarket products.
I think a built N/A b16 would cost way too much for the power you can extract from it. The cheapest way is boost.

Re: (Rainy City)
why would you buy a b16 for 2k? I would buy a used LS swap for $1k and then a b16 tranny for $500, and then piece together a turbo for $1k and you are only 500 more than the b16 with way more torque and HP

Re: (TAM35GNY)
To do the auto-manual swap you will need.
Pedals - not hard to swap them
Master cylinder and slave cylinder - buy new 100.00 Napa
Get a stainless braided line from MC to SC for around 75.00 from summit racing for the parts.
Transmission with top tranny mount - autos are different.
Shift linkage with shifter ****
Center console boot which will fit in your existing center console
Flywheel - clutch since autos have a torque converter
Different rear L-bracket for manual tranny.
And you will need the passenger side axle for a manual instead of auto.
Now you know what parts you are looking at for a auto>manual swap
If you can find a wrecked car for around 200.00 - 300.00 dollars that has been damaged in the back then you will be miles ahead because you can sell off all the other parts and get paid for the swap.
Thats what I did when I did my auto to manual swap on a 89 accord se-i, I ended up making about 400.00 after paying for the parts car and everything else.
Even if you do save up for a swap you are still looking at paying for all of this stuff to convert to manual so you might as well convert before you drop an engine in there.
Good luck.
