Boosting (turbo) a JDM D15B w/ 3 stage vtec??
Hey I just bought a JDM D15B OBD2 (96-00) complete swap for my 96 del sol. The motor has the 3 stage vtec (2 vtec solenoids).
It can only run properly with the P2J-003 ECU which i have btw.
I am about to go turbo on it and was wondering what are my options on tuning this. Only the P2J can run the 2 vtec solenoid.
I know many of you have never even heard of 3 stage vtec, dual vtec solenoids, or P2J ecus, but its worth a shot.
Thanks!

Congrats on a rare ecu and motor, I dont know how easy it will be to boost. that ecu and motor runs as lean as 20:1 in first stage. I am sure there are ways around this, but then you lose the benefit of the motor. you wont get the high 40mpg and boost.

Re: Boosting (turbo) a JDM D15B w/ 3 stage vtec??
my friend told me to just sell the ECU and swap over the regular single Vtec solenoid and run a chipped p28 or something.
But is it as easy as just swapping the solenoid for a regular one??
Gas is important to me right now but I just dont want to get ran over by traffic when merging.

if u want a good balance of power and fuel economy an LS motor with a small turbo will do the trick. but your motor was designed for extreme fuel economy, its a very good motor for that, dont butcher it up. if you want to stay single cam just get a d16, you can get them for $100 or less.

Yea. I totally agree and that is why I am so against boosting it. It was just an opportunity since a friend is giving me the turbo for free. with the economy right now I could use thee 40 MPG!!!

My personal theory has always been to use an automatic chipped P28 and use the circuitry normally used to control the automatic transmission lockup solenoids to control the other vtec solenoid (similar things have been done on OBD0 stuff, sometimes they also use the A/C clutch circuitry, I liked the automatic ECU idea better because A. automatic ECUs are usually cheaper, and B. I kind of like A/C.

have u heard of one stage vtec... cause that is what gonna happen if u boost ur motor, changing the engine managment...plain and simple, boosting an OBD2 car require u to either A buy a jumper harness and convert to obd1 p28 or B buy a AEM EMS standalone for obd2 ... assuming u have a 96+ civic ... u three stage wouldn't matter anymore when u change ur map... but when u boost it, it will fill strong as HELL

Re: Boosting (turbo) a JDM D15B w/ 3 stage vtec??
i have the obd1 jdm d15b.... and i have done all the research i can on the motor/s... the 3 stage vtec actually runs on 12 valves to about 2500 rpm, then the first stage kicks in opening the remaining 4, and then at about 5300 rpm the higher lobes kick in... i dont think this would be a good motor to boos, only for the simeple fact that there are more moving parts and with more parts there are usually more problem... i think you should get the single stage. all you have to do is swap heads and ecu's.... but to tell you my crx/jdm d15 got 43 mpg doing 80+ on the parkway behind an suv.... and beating on it i usually get around 30+

Yea boost is a no go. This is built for DD and MPG is my main GOAL. Turbo was just a thought because a friend was giving it to me for free.
Thanks everyone for your inputs.
