Default Boosting SOHC

Hey guys, I have a 99 Civic EX with mild upgrades. I am finally going to throw a turbo on it. My question is how much more power am I going to get out of a pretty much stock D16Y8 with a turbo? Will I be happy with it? Or should I just throw a different motor in there?

keep the motor u can run 8-10 psi safely its all about the tune
whats your budget

Well I'm only 16, and I have a job. I have about $500 saved up right now. My uncle owns an Import Performance shop in Socal, so he is hooking me up with this turbo kit for free as my late birthday present.

you cant run 10 psi on a sc 61 safely on a y8...

I would say reliable would be around 200 hp on a stock d series.

if your uncle is giving you a kit just get a smaller turbo to match it.

a 50trim or 15 g would be great and put you around 200 hp with a great power band.

I'm not quite sure what turbo it is, but the brand is XS Engineering. I think its the T3/T4 if I'm not mistaken. And I was only planning to run about 8 PSI because its all stock internals.

its not the PSI that kills your motor its the horsepower.

you can run 15 psi on a 14b turbo safely on your motor.

T3/T4 50 trim would be what i suggest.

get a good tune at 8-10 psi and you will be golden...tuning is key

Yeah he is going to tune it and everything for me. So how much HP are we looking at?

depends on how conservative the tune is and your engines condition. expect 180 to 200 hp

If you want more power, you're going to need upgrades to handle it. 200hp is max you should shoot for. Your kit can prob get you 250hp but the kit is not your problem. Your clutch, pistons, rods will break before you get there. If you want more than 200hp, upgrade pistons/rods/arp studs. New clutch is a must. Start with 200hp first. You'll be happy with the results.

Isnt XS Engineering that SS Autochrome crap?

I have no idea. Will an aftermarket clutch be a good upgrade? Right now I am running stock.

a lot of people doubt the d-series turbos but my cousin had a jdm d15b on 5 lbs and it suprised me.

Really? I just want my D16 to put out more power than what it is now, Right now its like 112 HP, and its really sluggish. I'm just hoping a turbo will really bring this thing to life.

you should read up on turboing and ask your uncle to have you do all the work as he watches. it will take twice as long, but if you do all the work and understand what everything does (with your uncles supervision of course, hes a good resource to start asking questions) this way you learn how to do it yourself and when **** starts to break you can diagnose it all by your lonesome

No, you're thinking of XS Power. XS Engineering makes quality parts, didn't know they make a Civic turbo kit though.

Yeah, I would love to install it, I might just do that. Yeah I guess they do. I have never heard of XS Engineering before,but he said they are a pretty good company.

On 10 psi with the common .57 trim t3/t3 look for around 190whp. I had a vitara/eagle setup on my old turbo d16 setup. I built it for 350whp but i traded before i hit that mark. For those who doubt the d-series, it did take a b20/vtec (cr-vtec) on 7 psi lol.

I was also planning on boosting my SOHC. I'm still OBD1 so things are cool. How much would a complete job end up costing including tuning? My Honda Guru friend said he can piece together a kit for me using a turbo from a volvo and install it all for $500. He told me he'd recommend I stay around 7psi for longest reliability. He said chipping and tuning is beyond him so I will have to purchase a chipped ECU and have the car tuned (Which I'm sure will cost MOREEEE than the turbo kit/install) I've heard good tuning could run from $300-$700? Is that correct?

what you make varies so much on what you tune it with, turbo size, piping size, exhaust size, shape of the exhaust and charge pipes, intercooler size. you will never know what you are going to make.

what is your uncle going to be tuning with?

like someone said earlier.. you should do your research before you just slap a turbo kit on... cuz if anything breaks then you wont know what to do...

Get a stock ECU tuned on Crome. You want a basemap on there at least if you wanna start the car up to make sure it's running ok. That's the fastest and easiest way for a good tune cheap.. But make sure your tuner is very familiar with crome and has a good knowledge of cars similar to yours.
