blown headgasket - how do i know what to replace?
Hi everyone,
I have a 92 Civic that had a blown headgasket, overheated, and died. That was the last time it ran.
How do I know what to replace? I picked up the Helms manual, and just want to keep the D15b7 that's in there now. If the engine overheated, would I just need to replace the head, gasket, and call it a day? Or does the entire longblock need to be replaced?
How can I tell?
Thanks,
-Brian.

Would a warped head be the reason why it doesn't even start up?
From what I've read by searching here, a blown headgasket still starts and runs, but very roughly.

It does crank. It has spark and fuel. It just wont start up. I am pretty much a mechanical newbie, so you have to speak to me like I'm a 6 year old
Thanks again,

depends on the machine shop, you may not have to hav eit resurfaced. bring it to a machinst and have them check it.
and there are several severity levels of a blow headgasket, some are just buring coolant, some wont even run. so when people say the car still starts and drives theirs isnt as bad as yours probably was.
just hope you didnt warp the head or block...if the head is warped i would definatley pull the engine and have the block checked also.

Brian just fixed a car with this exact problem and it wasnt starting. That's because it's flooded.
You will at least need to change the Head Gasket, but may want to change other gaskets while you're at it.
Taking the head off isnt that difficult if you do exactly what the manual tells you to do. Just make sure to scrape the head and block off very well (dont scratch).
If it only over-heated once your head should still be good, these engines dont take as much wear as higher HP engines. If it's been going on for a while then the head may need to be milled down.
Try changing that gasket first, it's not too much. Even if you dont know anything you and a friend can change it in 6 hours.
You can message or email me if you want any help and I'll try to help you out.

The only time you need to resurface the head is if the surface is bad in someway. Or just a little warped.
BUt yea get it checked for warpage. Also a good idea to pressure test it to make sure there are no cracks. Although as far as I know honda heads arnt prone to cracking, like some GM heads are.

Yeah they usually don't crack since they are aluminum, but slight warpage will cause it not to seal properly.
LOL GM heads I remember that. Those huge 350 cast iron heads. Heavy as **** and when you have to replace the headgasket they are prolly already cracked.

Re: (Djaric)
if it was time for a headgasket, then i would look into the timing belt and water pump as well, since its right there.
your car isnt starting because there is a bunch of antifreeze in the cylinders... stop cranking it over because youre goin to hydrolock your engine since there is so much fluid in the combustion chamber...

Not so much the V-8 heads, but alot of the 4banger heads cracked in a few certain spots. Or at least when they did crack, thats where you look first.
