Bizzare coolant leak to overflow with boiling, PLEASE help
Ok, after much testing we realize that the overflow is leaking fliud and its running down one of the ac lines. We pressure tested it @ 21 lbs and no leaks while the car was off. My friend who is a good mechanic told me that I need a new cap cause its sending all of the coolant there...the rad is what becomes empty. I bought a new one today and thought all was good.... until I turned on the ac which BTW gets warm when I sit at a light but its a new condenser with plenty of freon. The car was smoking bigtime after about 20 min but the temp gauge was normal. I was at a mech shop when it happened and they were all scratching their heads as we started it and the overflow was boiling!! Within a few seconds it stoppped boiling, which leaves me to believe when I have the ac it makes the car get hot. I am guessing a bad thermostat. Going to drive around now without the ac on and see what happens. Sorry for the missspelling, i am working and stopped my to type this real quick. Let me know if you guys have any ideas

Is it actually boiling or is it a leak somewhere in the system, and it's bleeding out through the overflow? I can't imagine coolant that is boiling hot being in the overflow.

Update: a mech told me that because the rad had nothing but water in it until I cleaned it out a week ago, that it is prolly half functional or clogged. I am thinking abpout pulling the thermostat and going from there. Does this sound like the possible culprit??

Thx for the reply. No leak bro, we tested it at mad pressure and nothing untill its running more or less with the ac on I believe. Not a drop, but man was it boiling just now , all of the coolant seems to go right to the over flow. BTW where is the t stat? On the front upper hose or behind the engine? I've heard both. 1.6 civic

Thats what another mechanic just told me. Thx guys. So a clogged rad is what it seems like huh? There was a gang of rust before I cleaned it so that is prolly it. One more thing when I flushed it and loosened the ****, even with the cap off the water just trickled out of the drain. It should have ran out faster right? Thats another sign of a possible clog.

Well, blowing water out of the coolant tank is also a sign of a blown head gasket. You get exhaust in the coolant which increases the pressure way over the cap pressure and water fills the tank.
Normally you can test this by using a emission testing probe over the cap (with it off). If you read hydrocarbons, you need a new HG.
