beyond redline
hey guys, this morning i was going to mcdonalds for breakfast and on the way i raced a gay 6cylinder mustang and handed him his butt.but i was shifting at 8rpm. my redline is 7600rpm. my question is if it is bad to shift that high on a jdm b16.

the b16 loves to rev, mybe the mark on the tach says 7600, but i believe the rev limiter is around 8200 and with the stock valve train i think the engine will take around 8400rpm. with type r springs+retainers it will go happily to 9000.

Re: (erubio14)
Your stock B16A will rev to 8000rpm without a problem. The B16A is very similar to the USDM B16A2 which also revs to 8000rpm. If you are just going off of what your tach is reading, then that is wrong (assuming that you dont have a 99-00 Si). I have a 92 Si, with redline well below where mine actually is, my motor safely revs to 9000rpms (although I only take it to 8500rpm). This topic is covered though, I would do some searching before you get flamed buddy.

Pointless unless you have a way of making power that high.

Last time i checked, making it rev out more = more power

Then why is the max power on just about every engine before it's redline?
Why does a Honda have VTEC?
You are a moron, sit back and read what the intelligent people on here have to say for a while before you ever post again.

Uh-oh...here we go. HT on a roll again.
It is true though what JDM-97CX is saying. Just because you are revving, doesnt mean you are actually making additional power. Go try and find yourself some stock dyno charts of different cars, and you will see what we are talking about.
Thats part of the reason why I shift at 8500rpm rather than the 9000rpm that I can go to. The other is for the longevity of my motor.

bahahaha Only if you have cams, compression and the ability to breathe way up there.
Otherwise raising your rev limit on a stock engine is a waste of time. You'll just add more wear and tear. There's a reason Honda put the redline where they did, you need to figure that out and find a way to make the power up there before you just start doing it.
edit: eru, 8 grand is fine when racing. I'm not sure where the peak power occurs on the rpm range, but you're not going to hurt the engine by shifting up there.

Yea and even then, I have a turbo hatch that is getting close to a high 10 and I shift at 9100, so I see no point in a mildly built B16 needing to rev that high if I don't.

Re: (Tyte4Door)
if the car isn't pulling anymore, the only reason you would rev any higher is to land in the power band when you shift gears but most engines are geared so they land in the power band with out having to bounce on the rev limiter. with my engine, you stop feeling the pull at around 7100-7200, which is where i shift evan though i could go to 7600 if i wanted.

Ok, not to reiterate, but, If you were handing him his *** you don't need to take it to redline (temping and fun as it is)
But congrats man... I hate Mustangs (No offence to anyone, JMO) Those guys hate getting spanked on by Hondas I love it!

assuming your signature is correct, you have a swapped civic. and your swapped engine is either a JDM b16a or a b16a3 like it says.
either way, your swapped civic didn't get its tach swapped out, so the redline you see is for the original engine.
if im incorrect, let me know. i'm just going by your sig.

lol listen, fuel cutoff on a b16 is 8700, max power is around 84-8500 so if u want to race, you have to rev that high... my b16 sir2 makes power till fuel cut off!!!
Your redline isnt 7600, thats just what ut tach says, on a b16 vtec is 5600 n redline is 8400!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: beyond redline (erubio14)
it is fine to redline your car. just dont do it that often cause it can do damage to internals and ****. worse that could happen is you DO ruin piston or what not and or your fuel/ignition cuts off when holding it in redline.

Re: (eg2sol)
This is how it goes
1st-gen JDM B16A redline is 8000 RPM, fuel cut is 8200
2nd-gen JDM B16A redline is 8200 RPM, fuel cut is 8400
USDM B16A3/B16A2 redline is 8000 RPM, fuel cut is 8200
I how this helps with the original question

not tru, im using obd2 ecu p2t, that is the 99-00si ecu for the b16a2 n like i said above my fuel cut is like 8600 8700
