Best year for a stock daily?
I'm looking into buying a civic hatch as my daily. I was wondering which would be best when stock and manual transmission.

I DD a 98 Hatch 130 miles a day for the past year..... it gets between 35-38 on the highway. No problems so far except the IAC went out on me. Its been golden other than that.

Good luck finding a 92-95 that isn't beat and hacked to hell. That's all I see around here. Mainly because they are so cheap right now all the know-nothing Fast and Furious kids buy them up. Even the 96-00 are getting to that state. I mean these are 11-19 year old cars we're talking about there.

I get 32MPG boosted. I'm talking about overall condition of them not MPG or driving style. You can find them alright but it's getting harder and harder to find them in decent condition. However the OP, as usual, didn't state what his criteria for a daily driver was.

Re: Best year for a stock daily?
IIRC (I don't have the weights in front of me) the 5th gens were lighter than their 6th gen counterparts. In terms of 5th gens, the CX and VX are probably the lightest, with the 6th gens, the CX is probably the lightest. So if you're going for gas mileage or a build, that would obviously be ideal. That being said, my '97 EX is the heaviest civic besides the '99/'00 Si made between '92-'00 and it will still pull 36mpg at 75mph on the highway during the summer.
Pick your poison, it's your call. Higher trims (EX/Si) mean it costs more, has more options, and is heavier, lower trims mean the opposite. It depends what you want it for.

Re: Best year for a stock daily?
OP, I agree with those that suggested an EH (92-95).
With that said, I would try to get a DX or Si (I have a 1993 CX).
My reasoning is: yes the CX is a bit lighter, but you will appreciate the reduced cabin noise of DX and Si if it's your daily driver. I just ordered a roll of b-quiet to reduce cabin noise in my CX, which is driving me nuts.
Additionally... the CX and VX are very underpowered. My CX (stock 8v D15B8) could barely pass a truck on the highway (after downshifting to 3rd and flooring). The DX and Si will give you those 30 or so more hp to make it easier to drive and pass if needed.
Good luck,
-Walter

Re: Best year for a stock daily?
any 92-00 civic is great as long as it's been maintained fairly decent. I'm daily driving a 97 hx just under 190k and still on the original clutch. I do need to get the timing belt and water pump done again.
the major differences in the hatchbacks is with the 92-95 civic si you get the d16z6 and all the 96-00 has the d16y7. 92-95 has a tailgate that lays down and the 96-00 the whole hatch opens up, me personally I like the tailgate idea better.
