Best year/differences between 96-00 hatchbacks?
I'm in college and need a new car. I've been looking at VW Golf but my gut is telling me to buy Honda.
Anyways, what are the differences between the 96-00 hatchbacks? Which year would be the best?
Any things I should look for?
Right now I'm just trying to find a car that has lowish miles (less than 12k per year, average) and for under 6k.

Get 99 or 00 unless you find a amazing deal for the other years. According to your zipcode in your avatar, you are in CA....so you shouldn't have much worries on rust ---
things to look for, one that hasn't been swapped, beat on, riced out, etc.
Going be hard to find something decent with under 120k miles out there though, where hondas hold a premium. Over here on the other coast, you could easily find a hatch for under 3k, however you'd have to fix some rust and all that comes along with that.

How about the EG hatch?
And yeah, I'm not worried about rust. I'm more concerned about it being raced and then dumped.

Why even bother asking about 96-00 hatch if you're also thinking about buying an EG?
I prefer the body of EG but I like the OBDII for diagnostics on the newer cars.
Such a pain to back probe everything, convert volts into something meaningful.
96 and newer just hookup the scanner and look at live data is so nice.
