Default Best Oil to Use?

Hey everyone. I'm curious as to what kind of oil you guys use in your Civics....like what brand do you prefer? is it regular, high-mileage or synthetic? what viscosity? I have been using Castrol GTX High-Mileage 5W30 religiously ever since I got mine nearly 3 years ago, and I find it works alright ( 190,000km on engine), but I've been thinking of switching to full synthetic. I'm just not sure if it will be beneficial to do it. Any suggestions or comments? Thanks!

Search, you'll find about 500 threads of people arguing.

Just use 5W30 of any oil you want.

/thread.

As stated, this has been discussed many, many times. You'll find a lot of information by using the search feature. Personally, I'd stick with what you're currently using, and perhaps send out a sample for a UOA to determine how well it's working. With oil threads like these, you're going to likely get a different opinion in almost every reply. In the end, any quality 5W-30 changed at reasonable intervals will be perfectly fine. If you really want to get into discussions regarding motor oil, you can also check out the Bob Is The Oil Guy forums.

i work in an automotive shop and we normally put 10w30 in the cars but most hondas call for 5w30 or 5w20.we only use penzoil unless some one brings there own oil in.

Royal purple or Amsoil for premium synthetics is my vote. Valvoline and Castrol get my vote for traditional motor oil, and common synthetics.

Where I work I just use 10w-30 Castrol GTX unless it says 5w-30 or owner brings their own oil.

I use quaker state high rpm synthetic blend 20 50. Been using it for years already. Never failed me . If your in a colder area get 5w20. I just use the thicker oil since its pretty hot over here during these times of the year. I tried royal purple and also mobil but i felt like there wasn't much difference at all in all the oils. It just depends on your tastes and stuff basically . Like the other guy said, oil is oil

I felt like though castrol turned black pretty fast. quake state didn't turn as black as fast. Royal purple lasted as much as quaker. Not sure about mobil since its been awhile but if you want the high end stuff get the royal purple

I use Mobil 1 Fully Synthetic Extended Performance 10w30. I still change it every 3,000 miles just as a safe rule of thumb. I'm thinking that I will go down to 5w30 though as Honda recommends because I have a little bit of a tap that is annoying and I may have to go down a notch.

Sure it will, if you live in the Sahara

5w-30 it's what your car manual tells you.

What a waste of money. I use synthetic and I change mine every 5,000 miles.

I even sent in a sample and they told me I could wait another 1-2,000 miles before changing.

If you're going to pay 2-3 times as much for synthetic oil that's designed to go for 5-9 thousand miles why would you change it WAY before it's scheduled change time?

That's like using conventional oil and changing it every 200 miles.

Essentially, the first number indicates how the oil performs at low temperatures, and the second number indicates the viscosity at high (operating) temperatures.
