Default best motors

im considering a swap and just cannot make up my mind. i know i should choose myself but its just hard. i have found some swaps for some good deals but just want something thats good and reliable but fast at the same time. the choices i chose--d16z6 that i would turbo and tune to around 200whp im hoping, ls-t setup with around 240whp, or an all-motor k20. all of them are reasonable, even the k20. im guessing about these prices...

k20-$1800 full swap
ls swap(no turbo)-$1400 (maybe cheaper)
d16z6(no turbo, just motor-no tranny or ecu or wiring)-$400

if you all know another good motor...let me know.

If you can afford a K20, by all means, DO IT! If not, personally, I'd go for a B18C1/5 for the ease of swap and power (if you want LSD, get the C5).

Who's motor did you steal to get a full k20 swap for $1800?

Jesus. b16's are hardly that price.

I call bullshit.

Get ready for some major custom work.

BTW, ALL 06+ Si's have LSD, so it's not really rare.

i found this out on the money issue...
-DC sports hybrid header= 375.21
-Conversion subharness= 349.00
-Custom axles= 349.00
-Custom mounts= 575.00

i just dont know if this money could be better spent on an ls-t or just a sohc vtec turbo. im also considering the b18b1 but im not sure...its almost just as expensive as the k20 but sooooo much easier to swap. lol what you guys think?

It really depends on how much time you have.
If you have never done a swap before, letalone a K-swap, it takes some know-how.

If you have the money to build a SOHC-turbo, or even an LS-turbo, id say go for it.

Id say build the SOHC turbo make around hm... 200-300 whp for WAY less than the k20 and with the money you saved you can keep your engine maintained and get a suspension to keep that power on the ground. Doesnt really matter how much HP you got if you cant get no traction.

well actually, i have noticed that a turbo kit for the sohc is just as much as what i will pay for the k-series swap with the mounts, axles, subharness, and hybrid headers...so i am still undecided on what i should do. im wanting the k but im worried about finding someone to swap it for me and about the reliability afterwards. but i know its my decision but i was just curious what you guys would do in this situation.

I've heard you got to fab the engine and **** too so dont forget the cost of all that bullshit. Truthfully man a K-Swap is basically a "Look at what I got". You could build that D up and crank more HP for around the same price or less than the K. But go for what YOU want it's YOUR car.

Turbo the d16z6 and tune it around 7-8psi to make about 200whp probably the cheapest and most fun you will have with the money.

i was also thinkin this game.....
-buy the k20
-buy the d16z6 and swap soon and drive it around
-gradually buy all the bullshit i need to do the k swap
-and then yank the d16 out and drop the k in
-sell the d16 swap to make some money back

do you think that sounds like a good idea or just stick with sohc for good? lol but im a big fan of k-series engines.

but how much is that gonna run me....turbo and motor and all? j/w cuz the whole k swap will cost me right around $3.5k i think. but thats what im thinkin about doin is the d16z6 swap for now then turbo and run about 10 psi after maybe sleeving it..then tune it and hope for 220whp. lol

I don't think the op realizes that it's only 1800 for his K20, but he's got to drop about 8 grand more to actually put it into his car...

EDIT:
K20 isn't enough bang for your buck IMO, get an LS, nice, cheap, torquey motors. LS is fine for daily driving, and when boosted, they can handle nice amounts of power. Not to mention there's obviously the option to go LS/VTEC for either a strong naturally aspirated build, or boost. LS motors are very versatile.

yeah i know this...but a k20 for 1800? thats a once-in-a-lifetime price for that. but im kinda on a budget so i think im goin sohc turbo once i can scrape enough cash together. lol but im thinking about picking it up just to have, build it back to a complete engine and sell it for about $3500. just not decided yet. thanks guys for your input....

Most of your funds will go to fab work. K20 will not be your best bang for buck. LS-T/GSR-T will be your best bet.

But I will say this: if I can find an ITR shell, I'd love to swap in a K20. 3 reasons: 1) Awesome N/A performance. 2) 6-speed 3) Reliability. For high revving track days, the K20 will generally be more reliable than LS/GSR-Turbo set ups (note the word, "generally").

The K swap might be out of the questior for you at this point its a very expensive swap. I would just boost the D. You wouldnt have to get new motor mounts, shift linkage, ect. A full d16z6 swap you can get around 400-500 maybe a little bit more, and thats everything. I would buy the little kit of ebay (yea ebay but its actually decent) that comes with viatra pistons, eagle rods, cometic head gasket, valve cover gasket, bearings, blah blah. and its only around 700 bucks. The turbo kit it self would be any where from 1000-3000 depending on what you get, just make sure you have the right fuel management and tune for the setup. maybe a little less if you buy it from a friend or something. Tune that setup on 15psi . But stock boost would be fine and belive me you would have a lot of fun. Turbo "Feels" fast lol... But thats just me. Oh and if you blow up the motor o well. just get a new one for under 400 bucks.
