Which is the best D-Series for my EG Hatch?
Alright I have researched the hell outta this, and I CAN'T choose which I want. I know I want a D-Series SOHC VTEC, b/c it'll be a cheap starter swap. Just dunno which one to get (which one is most upgradable, best power potential.
P.S.- Please don't post if all you are going to tell me is get a B- or H-Series. I want the D-Series for how much cheaper it is, and just to have a true sleeper: a B and H killing D-Series. LOL if that's possible
Any and all info, opinions, etc. is greatly appreciated. Thanks

hmm you would need to BUILD the motor before its a B and H series killer. it's very possible but heres what you dont want to hear, if you are going to become the B, H and K series KILLA you imagine, its gonna take some dough. but if your just looking to upgrade your SOHC to be a little faster, i'd suggest swapping in a d16z6 which is found in 92-95 civic si's and ex's. buy a cam and cam gear, i/h/e, you can do all that yourself and then you will feel quite a difference in your SOHC beast!! good luck

yeah, there is another big decision, you turbo that thing, and you will add some real nice hp, without having to build the engine very much, if at all.. With a little build up though, you can push the turbo that much further In the long run, unless you are one of those people who are dead set on having an N/A engine, I would turbo that baby!

Or D16Y8, and turbo it. Build a solid engine and it shouldn't disappoint you. Problem is money (pretty much the same with other engines out there). So if you have some spare money, build one at your own pace.
We have a local shop that recently introduced financing program on all of their services at a very low interest rate. Suddenly, getting a fully built turbo D engine (or whatever you want) has become that much easier.

What i would do is get a d16z6 block a d16y8 head. Build it with some low compression pistons, around 9:1. Get some eagle rods. Something like a Walboro fuel pump, some 450cc injectors, a good fuel management, like uberdata, or hondata. Good gaskets, new intake manifold, and then turbo it. That should not have a problem beating gsr's.

Go with a d16z6. then you'll run with gsr's. I have a d15b7 non-vtec with a cx tranny and I can come close.

I agree, that's what i'm doing myself. Junkyard y8. And while you're out there pick up an STD manifold. Hell, in one junkyard you could piece together a kit if you know what you're looking for

Re: (300whpOrBust)
I put a D16z6 in my 1993 civic (it was a dx) And it was a great learning experience. Now I have that same d16 turbo charged and it is a very quick and fun to drive car. So I say good choice on your first swap.

i did it all day long when i was all motor.
go with d16z6 man. stay away from the d15b. if u blow it you need a new motor cus nobody can figure out what parts are inside of it. also if u spin a bearing u need a new motor.
if u go with a z6 u can find cranks all day long(i have 5) and blocks are pretty common. also the y8 is good but i wouldnt use the shortblock. only head and manifold for stock. the y series motors are more prone to spinning bearings which can be a pain in the *** for the average honda person who doesnt like to turn cranks.
if u need any info u can pm me. ive built many d16s stock spec to zc piston blocks in my living room floor.

get your dx car and run it at the track. take the same car and put an ex/si tranny on it change nothing and run it at the track again tell me what happens.

you are correct. the gear ratios on a dx,cx,vx tranny are crap compared to the ex/si tranny which is still pretty long almost ls teg tranny long.
