Best D-Series Combo???
ok so i have been searching for about 3 hours now looking for the best d-series head and block combo. I've searched all over; on this forum and a whole bunch more and i just can't get straight forward answer. I heard that the z6 block with the y8 head is the best. But Then i Heard the jdm d15b is the best D motor. All of this is so confusing. Thanks ahead of time for any help given. its greatly appriciated. PS. IM NOT GOING B-SERIES SO PLEASE DON'T REFER IT!!

yea i would say the z6 block with the y8 head would be the best but thats talking about just a straight up n/a build the y8 block has a tendensy to have the oil pump go i forget y but im sure someone on here will clear that up for me but as for the head on the y8 is good mostly the intake manifold but if i was you i would just go for a staright up z6

It's pointless to try and mix and match D-series heads and blocks in an attempt to gain horsepower. D-series are econobox engines. No matter what you may do to them, short of boosting it, it will be sloooooow. You will not be satisfied with the results.

This question is so open ended and filled with false assumptions. If you were in a D-series car that SUPPOSEDLY had the stones to "scrape" more powerful engines with only a head swap, then build it like that one. You already have the blueprint. What's the point of the question?

lol.... sounds like the b16 and gsr's need the driver mod. y7/y8 engine cranks only had 1 cooling oil holes in the crank as the older d16's like the z6/a6/zc had 2 holes on the rod journals. everyone blames it on the y8 oil pump but ive ran a y8 oil pump with no mods with ok oil pressure for 3 yrs. the z6 oil pump did flow better then the y8 but i dont see it being the problem unlike the crank issue. any d15 i would say is a weak choice and the rods are smaller. i think the best motor is the z6. the y8 tends to confuse people that are running chipped obd1 ecu's. most obd1 motors were running 16* btdc at idle and the y/7/y8/y5 all ran 12* at idle. also the y7/y8 cams keys are 4.5 degrees different. some people run y8 cams in z6 heads. to each thier own. if u looking for power just get a z6 and boost it.

Re: Best D-Series Combo???
You should specify "better". Better for boost, better for N/A, better for MPGs? Are you looking for low end torque or high rpm power? What if one engine is "better" stock, while another responds "better" to bolt ons?
Point being, "which engine is better" is a difficult question to answer, if not impossible.

Ok well im looking for better as in a N/A build. I want a single cam that hauls *** and people think its a twin cam. I just want a setup that has the most potential when it comes to N/A.

Re: Best D-Series Combo???
I have a z6 block with y8 head & a ex/si tranny i beat people with full y8's, and people with full z6's. And keep up neck and neck with ls swaps. Also it reallly depends on the driver and need to know the limit of your car and how to drive it.

If I were going to go D-series for my swap, I would have definitely gone with this:
