Default Battery Replacement??

My Civic is a 1999 model, and I am the original owner.

I still have the original battery, and it shows no signs of failing. Should I replace it anyway, since it is 11 years old?

I don't really mind getting a replacement, since after 11 years I have definitely gotten my moneys worth out of it.

How long have people out there kept their original batteries?

I assume the OEM Honda battery is made by Yuasa like the other Honda batteries I have seen. Is that a better quality battery then most of the replacement batteries like Die Hard, Duralast, Exide, and the rest?

I don't want to be left stranded somewhere with a battery that won't start the car. If it is common for the batteries to last this long then I won't worry about it.

Jeeze, how many miles do you have on your car?

My original Honda battery lasted about 4 years. Replaced it in 2004 with a walmart special that lasted until 2009. Replaced that with an O'Riley's battery.

I've not heard of an original Honda battery lasting that long, but mine's pushing a little bit of extra audio equipment. If I were you, I'd swap it with a walmart battery. Any battery is on borrowed time past 5 years.

That could happen with a brand new battery as well. You just Never know. You going to replace every part on your car that could go bad one day? Besides, Batteries normally don't just quit working, It'll give you a warning. You could also have it tested @ autozone if your worried.

Not necessarily, but I do try to preemptively replace the parts that are likely to make me late for work on the most inconvenient days.

I have about 115k miles on the car. I have the factory stereo and I don't take many short trips, so I don't know if that has helped extend the life of the battery.

I agree. The 10 minutes it takes to replace the battery is better than an hour when it does go bad.

That could be.

It's 100% up to you. Honestly, I talk crap about changing my battery ahead of time, but usually they die on me before I even think about it. It's pretty rare that they give you a whole lot of warning.

At that age, I would preemptively replace it, then get used to a 5 year schedule. That's generally what they last for.

Finally replaced the OEM battery in my '97 hatch today. I left the headlights on for a few minutes at the bank drive up, engine off. It did start after fifteen minutes so I took it to the nearest parts store and left it running while I bought a battery. Guess I have nothing to complain about, but I wouldn't try for a record if I were you. It might end up being being a painful learning experience.

So your original battery lasted 13 years? Well I wasn't even considering going for the record... until you brought it up.

Since my car is a 99, that means I have to keep my original battery for at least another 2 years to tie the record, and 3 years to set a new one.

the original one leasted 5 years in my 97 hx and I got a new one in April 2002 and I'm still running on that one so I'm going on 8 years. When it goes bad I'm def. going back and getting another honda battery. The ones from advance,autozone,walmart,etc... you'll be lucky to get 3 years out of them without having any issues.

Costco is a great place for a replacement battery. I replaced my battery a few weeks ago and it was the same battery that honda sells for a 100 bucks.

Not to burst your bubble, but last time I bought a battery at my local Honda dealership it was $80. It was maybe a year and a half ago. My friend's dad works there and sold it to me, so maybe he just hooked me up some how.

On the main topic, 11 years?!?!? That's pretty amazing, mine always seem to last four or less, probably because I do make many short trips.

thats kinda a rip for 100.

my battery lasted 9 years before it decided to give out. id get it replaced just since after 5-6 years they tend to start wearing out fast specially when it gets cold.

and they don't always give you a warning. you may have the right voltage but sometime it may not hold a charge so when you go to turn it over...nothin.

When I bought my first car, 92 accord, it had the original battery. I bought it like 2 years ago or so when I was 16. It gave out 3-4 months after the purchase.

If the battery has lasted that long, then you definitely got your money's worth. But if it hasn't gave you one problem, then why worry? But you can always get it tested and if then make your final decision.

I finally replaced my original, 11 year old, OEM factory battery today. It was still working well and starting the car. However, I decided that after 11 years it was time to replace it anyway. I am the original owner of the car, so it has performed well for me since the day I bought the car.

I decided to replace it with another OEM Honda battery. It has a label on it that says 100 month waranty. That is a little over 8 years. I am confident it will last at least that long based on the last battery.

The old white Panasonic batteries used to last forever, it wasn't that uncommon to get 12 years out of them, but the ones Honda sells now aren't the same, they're not really any better than anything else anymore.

I thought Yuasa manufactured the old and new Honda batteries.

The one I pulled out of my Civic was definately Panasonic, original from '94 as far as I could tell. lasted 12 years. I worked for honda within the past year, the new batteries don't last like the old ones did.
