BAR/REF Question for CA peeps...What catalyitic converter? New law?
I have a 2000 Hatch with all obd2 wiring and a 2000 LS (b18B1) swap. I am currently running a straight pipe with only the primary sensor plugged in. I have not wired in the secondary o2 sensor yet, but I will do so as soon as I get the proper catalytic converter.
NOW, my question is:
I recently went to get an obd2 cat installed and the guys at the muffler shop told me that the law changed this year and new obd2 cats have been introduced for CA. SO, if I were to install a 49 state cat OR "last year's" odb2 cat, will my car not get BAR'd?
At this point, my car is ready to be BAR'd except for the secondary o2 and the cat. So, I need to know if the ref actually crawls underneath the car to check the part# to make sure it is a CA cat.
A HUGE thanks in advance!
Note: I am running an EM1 harness.

hi there man sup
ok this is what they do when u go to a ref station they check that all the little things u need in the engine are there like the sensors pvc and lets say u have aftermarket parts are legal for the cat they do check it but not like in detail but since urs is obd2 of course here going to connect it to the ecu plug in to see that ur engine light wont be on all the time and that all sensors are working properly so if dont have the second sensor it may or may not throw a code

Re: BAR/REF Question for CA peeps...What catalyitic converter? New law?
Thanks for the info.
I will be installing the secondary o2 sensor so that is not an issue.
The only thing I am concerned about is the new catalytic converter law. So, my question is for people who have gotten their car BAR'd in 2009. Specifically, I want to know if they actually look at the part # to see if it is a CA cat VS a 49 state cat (or "last year's" cat).

i HIGHLY doubt that there is such thing as that law. some ppl at muffler shops are crazy.
the one where i went to get my exhaust installed said that it is NOW legal to run a straight pipe but i knew it wasnt. so yea. but like i said, i doubt there is such a law. if there is then DAMN!
EDIT: besides, you can just go to a junk yard and pick up a cat from a honda from 96+ and have it installed. since we are all not going to change the cat. so just use your stock cat and your good

wouldn't this only concern newer cars...and since yours is 2000, shouldn't it not matter?

I think you got it right. From what I have heard the muffler shops can get in big trouble if they don't install the correct cat.
If your car is a federal/49 state emissions car, then you would need a 49 state legal cat.
If the car is a CA emissions car, then you will need a CA cat. With the (NEW)CARB number.
To tell you that he is or isn't going to check it would be a guess for the most part.
One ref might one ref might not. The ref's do differ. So that is why you need to get the info from him only. He is the one going to pass you.
As for the junkyard cat's, it is illegal for the junkyards to sell used cat's in CA. I know some will, Most will not.

Hmmm...now I have my work cut out for me. I am currently running 2.25 piping straight to the muffler (CTR) so it would be terribly restrictive to get an OEM cat welded in . I guess I have to fork out more dough and get flanges welded in place so that something else can be installed later. My priority here is to get the car BAR'd because I am selling it (sale pending) and the buyer wants the car BAR'd.

the ref isnt going to crawl under the car and check the #s on ur cat..he will just take a look under the car makin sure u have a cat and a 2nd o2 sensor...one big thing about the ref. is that u need ALL ur readiness monitors to be ready to Ready b4 u can pass
