ball joint spins when I try to take it off

ball joint spins when I try to take it off
I have a 98 ex coupe , d16y8. The tranny went so I am in the process of changing it . I am currently stuck on the passenger side axle. The ball joint spins when I try to take it off. I have tried about everything and it still doesn't budge . Can I take off the Lower control arm to temove the axle? Will that give the axle enough clearance to take it out of the wheel hub?

Large needle nose vice grips. Carefully move the boot out of the way enough to grab the UN THREADED stud with the vice grips.

op this is most likely happening because the threads on your ball joint are damanged. Next time you take you "pop" the lower ball joint off do not take the nut all the way off. If you do remove the nut, when the joint is poped loose it will cause metal to shear on the threads. If you keep the nut on, the nut will "catch" the metal and prevent thread damange..
when i had this problem i ended up leaning my pry bar againts the lower ball joint (against the boot) and using a 4foot metal pipe on the end of the pry bar to putt alot of pressure againts the joint to stop the spin. hard to explain

The power in this approach is hopefully reducing the amount of back and forth to the PC/Internet.
Oh and not saying that the suggestion won't work, just making an observance to the behavior. I really don't foresee all the current suggestions failing.

Yes, it will work. I had the same dilemma although I simply could
not separate the ball joint. Pounding on the knuckle w/ a BFH
seemed pointless after awhile so I attacked from the direction you
noted. Four large (19mm socket) bolts on the underbelly.
Remember to point the wheels straight ahead if you turned them
in order to access any bolts. Otherwise, when you go to place the
new axle, the geometry will be off and you will have much aggravation.
