I am building a B18C1 rotating assembly to go with my B16 head.

My machine shop says balancing my crank is a must if I am going with aftermarket pistions and rods. I was going to get them to assemble the bottom end, but with a crank balancing thrown in, their price just doubled.

Should I have it all balanced? If so, to what specs?

yes, have it balanced. specs im not sure? ask the shop for what they reccomend.

They want $350 to assemble it, and $350 for the balance. Shitty part is balancing isn't in-house, so they have to send it away. They need rotating assembly and flywheel for balancing.

The shop I use has to send it out too but its half of that price. Id shop around man

But does it even need to be balanced? Some have told me its overkill.

I am using a stock crank, SRP pistions with eagle rods.

no it doesnt NEED to be balanced but dont like worring about throwing a rod thru my block at 8k cause i didnt wanna spend the extra money .. just get it done its more of an assurance thing then anything cause if your spending that kinda money to build your bottom end why not do it right the first time

You dont need the whole assembly to balance the crank. Our cranks are a "180" design where its one set of pressure on each side. So if the crank is balanced, and all your new parts are equal weight (which they usually are) everything is balanced. V engines need the whole assembly to balance a crank because they are a different degree of design. I send all my cranks to Benson. I would suggest you do the same.

Just spent 250 here for my crank/ rods/ pistons ect to get ballanced out in Baltimore, its a good thing to do, not worth blowing the motor up cuz you got cheap at the end.
