What engine?
If D series, I doubt you were hearing vtec engaging anyways. Splice a 2$ light(autozone/pep boys) into your vtec wire(the green one) and just let it dangle somewhere in your car. When you hit the vtec mark the light will turn on. Vtec lights are good for trouble shooting things like these.
I have a D15B and mine kicks in at 5500 rpm and you cant really hear a difference. I keep my vtec light by my ecu for when Im trouble shooting things like this.

Well run to your local autozone and grab that 2$ light I was talking about and splice it into your vtec power wire. You can easily do it in the parking lot and test it on the ride home.

Well, the only reason why I said to do that is because my TPS sensor is completely shot, I can unplug it or leave it in and theres no difference. But my VTEC still kicks in.

yes the tps not working properly will keep vtec from engaging. i dont remember exactly how much throttle is required but if the car doesnt know exactly where its positioned it wont engage for safety of the motor.

I thought the throttle position was determined to be adequate based on manifold pressure. Would the TPS matter in that case?
