Default bad rings on my b16 block...

ok, so I just found out from my mechanic that I have bad piston rings on my block. He is saying it would probably be better/easier for him just to put a new block. Now it is under warranty but not with honda so they are going to write the machanic a check and I guess I have a choice of what block I want. what do you guys think I should do...i want to make it as legal as possible as well as able to pass smog and what not...If I got a gsr block would I have to get a USDM 2000+ block or what..? I am a little confused on how it all works, and also with the gsr block would I have to switch out anything else such as ECU..or anything or would it just be like a plug and play type deal..any help would be GREATLY appreciated!!

Thanks in advance!!

I dont believe there is any difference in the GSR block cept that its bigger in displacement. The only thing i would think would be different is if u didnt have a knock sensor b4 you will need one if u get the GSR block. and if u dont want to run the knock sensor you will need a Chipped P28. if you are running OBD-2 You will need a OBD-2 to OBD-1 Jumper Harness.

You should look into getting a b20 block. If you do some searching you will find that it is not that difficult to build a b20vtec. A GSR block will work as well though. Pretty much any b-series bottom end other than the b16a2 will benefit you.

However, if your mechanic is telling you that it would be better to get a whole new block rather than replace rings I would get a new mechanic - now. IM me if you want any more info/specifics.

edit- missed that california/legal part. You should probably stay with a b16 if legality/smog is a major concern for you.

have your mechanic build your block with high compression. You'd get a lot more power than just getting a b18c1 block. In fact, I think that you may lose power from putting a b16 (pr3) head on a gsr block. I think it creates lower compression. That is just what I heard. Whether or not it's true...I don't know. But it kind of makes sense. I'd get the b20 block before the b18c1, or a b18c5 would be great!

If you already have a header just build your b16 up. Otherwise you will need a header with your new block.

Also, if you are getting the block from the dealer you are going to need more than just the block.

For the amount of money you are going to get for a new block you could build a killer b16.
