BAD oil burn @ high rpms
Was given an EG dx last week. Its gonna be my beater...so I dont intend on dropping allot of cash in it.
Odd thing though: Noticed that during a hard shift from 1st to second it spewed a cloud.
So I pulled over and had a friend rev the engine. It was dark, but the exhaust seems clear up until a given RPM (no tach), probably neer 4000, then it turns into a cloud. Its bad enough to engulf the car.
I pulled the PCV valve and it was a bit oily and jammed. Installed a used one from my 90 Si, let the car warm up and checked again. I still shoot clouds.
I ran the compression and get 210 210 200 210. The rusults might be a bit off since the valve cover gasket leaks so I end up having a few drips of oil fall into the cylender when I pull a plug.
Car has ~ 269 000 km
I have an 89 DX that burns oil, but doesnt create so much smoke so instantly...its more of a gradual thing on the 89. Its like I have smoke VTEC on the eg

Okay, how do you do a compression test? Is it hard? I would like to do one myself. Can you do it yourself? Or does it have to be done professionally?

Good link. Now, could that damage anything while doing that? Like cranking the motor over 5 times with the pedal to the floor?

Re: BAD oil burn @ high rpms (slambedcivic)
you prolly got bad valve guides along with seal. Compression test won't tell you those are leaking. I wouldn't worry too much if it's your beater. Just don't beat on it and add oil when needed.
I wouldn't use non of the Lucas Oil Crap
it's basicly a higher viscousity oil, and pretty much same thing with the tranny fluid
I would only use it if I need to sell my car ASAP.

Re: BAD oil burn @ high rpms (ABK)
I have to pass smog test with the car though
And no, cranking yoiur car over with the pedal to the floor during a compression test isnt bad for it.
I'm confused about the valve seals beeing the problem though, the normal sympotms are puffing when its been sitting for a while...I dont have that

His compression test says otherwise.
bad valve seals would cause you to burn oil when you step on the gas when they are about to give out.

Re: (ABK)
go change your oil... and add a quart of lucas oil stabilizer.... change the oil 1000 miles later, and use the stabilizer again... it worked on my D15B7.... sealed the seats right up. RARELY did i get any more smoke.

Something is up with my compression tests, my other civic burns oil like hell, and I again get good results.
Ièm gooing to try and seak up as much oil as possible from the spark plug channels before pulling em to isnert the compressiwon tester...maybe the few drops of oil that fall cause the rings to seal.
and no the engine hasnt been rebuilt recently.
Ièm leaning towards oil stabilizer or such gunk..
