bad idle and engine shuts off....

i recently brought a eg hatch, guy said it was siting around for a few months... so i did a stock motor swap, changed - dist, cap, rotor, wires, sparkplugs, fuel filter.... here's the problem, when i start the car engine shakes hard.. i rev up the car and engine stops shaking, when i let go of the gas engine shuts off... if i dont rev up the car then engine stays running but shakes hard.... dont know what the problem is, could it be bad gas because car was siting around, or could it be bad iac valve (im hoping not the valve cause its like over a hundred dollars at kregans), could someone help me out with this.

Re: bad idle and engine shuts off....

is it dropping in RPM's and that's why it dies?
as for the IACV take it off clean it and reinstall
gas... well if your still running on the old gas than that could be a problem...
full tank? how many miles have you driven?

Re: bad idle and engine shuts off....

Is the CEL ON?

Is the idle problem only when the engine is cold or also when the engine is hot? If only when cold, then try cleaning the FITV.

cleaned the iacv and now it wont run when i start the car unless i gas it, but when i let go of the gas engine dies... i didnt drive the car yet, just been testing in park. and its half tank of old gas. engine dies out during hot and cold.

You definitely should put some fresh gas in the tank.

When you turn the key to ON(II), does the CEL remain ON or turn OFF after 2 seconds?

You should also check your fuel pressure regulator.

engine light turns off... no cel. and should i top off the gas or drain it and add new gas? kinda dont wanna waste gas. lol. and yeah, i'll check the regulator. thanks. anyone got any other info fo me?

Re: bad idle and engine shuts off....

checked the fuel pressure regulator and its fine... i pulled out the pcv hose to create a vacuum leak and the rpm's increase lightly and the engine idles fine but high, after a few seconds engine dies... so yeah, im still lost.

Re: bad idle and engine shuts off....

What's the fuel pressure with and without the regulator vacuum hose connected?

If you don't want to drain the old gas out of the tank, at least add some fresh gas to the tank.

After the engine stalls, is it difficult to restart?

Double check that the crucial ground wire on thermostat housing isn't loose or corroded.

car starts up and runs ok in cold, but when it warms up it dies when i tap the gas. also no power in drive when the car is warmed up.

is it the iacv or ecu?

Re: bad idle and engine shuts off....

if it runs when its cold then its IACV for sure.

could that cause no power even though i have the gas pedal alll the way down? like press the gas and the car doesnt even move.

no not really, is it missfiring? have you checked your spark plugs & wires?
