Bad gas milage and no vtec... help!
Hey guys, im new to honda-tech, and somewhat new to hondas in general, but i have a problem. About a month ago i bought a 1997 civic dx 2dr with a B16a swap out of a 1994(i think) SIR. The engine cranks, runs, idles at about 1K, and i drive it daily, but something is definatly wrong. My CEL is on, i get about 20MPG and no vtec. Unfortunatly i didnt do the swap, and dont have the knowlege to re-do it. the CEL code is for the map sensor, which has already been replaced. I really hope that this is an easy fix. Any help would be great.

Try splicing a new plug on it and reset the ECU.
A MAP Sensor will definetely cause a Honda to run crappy.

soooo, i was told by a local mechanic that it was a map code for the CEL, but i just checked it, and it is also throwing a TPS code. Could this be the problem?

sounds like the tps sensor and the map sensor are plugged in wrong take the sensors unplug them and then take the one that is plugged into the map and plug it into the tps and vice versa

In simple terms, switch the TPS and MAP sensor plugs.

unfortunally hondas dont have mass air flows so in order to determine air coming in it relys on map sensor to determine pressure, tps to determine load, and intake air temp cause temp also reflects pressure. so you would get horrible gas mileage if you are thrownig codes for them first the map and tps are 5volt refrence sensors which have 3 wires 1. constant 5volts 2. Ground 3. sensor signal so start with makeing sure you got 5 volts on one of the 3 wires then check for voltage on the ground side if you see voltage its got a bad ground. then on the signal wire watch voltage go up and down smoothly as you either move the throttle blade or cause pressure to go up and down, depending on what sensor you are looking at start with that you should come up with somtheing.

you must clock the tps. either eyeball to where the old one was, or hook up a dmm and adjust until you get the correct voltage i cant remember what it is at idle but you get the idea.

well i installed my new TPS, and i still have a check engine light, but only for my MAP sensor, the TPS code is off now, so i guess im going to assume that the mechanic did not change the map like he told me he did, because he didnt charge me, and buy anouther one to see if that fixes my problem, sound resonable?
