Default BAD Exhaust smell & BAD gas mileage...

Hello, everyone! I'm new to the boards and new to Honda's.
Here's my problem. I bought a '93 Civic Hatch with a B18a1 swap a few weeks ago. This thing was put together VERY POORLY! It did not have an o2 sensor due to the wrong exhaust manifold & downpipe. I got the correct stuff & installed an o2 sensor. The thing STILL gets HORRIBLE gas mileage and has a very strong exhaust odor. My buddy driving next to me said that the exhaust smell was worse than a diesel, my clothes smell like exhaust too.
I filled up the gas tank this morning and drove 50 miles to work & back and I'm setting on a half tank!

Anyway, do any of you have any suggestions of what the problem could be?
Wrong ECU?
Also, the car didn't have an intake/filter setup, so I put on a chrome tube with a cone filter on it. It doesn't have the air sensor in it. Would that cause the problem?
THANKS!!!!!

Maybe a basic tune will help..

Does the car have a cat? Was the o2 sensor you put in brand new?

edit- btw remember you only have 5 posts a day since your on trial, update your original post with quotes of people replies to answer questions!

I haven't done a tune up, but I'm not sure that would solve this problem, good to do though... It has a cat, I just had it at the exhaust shop on Sat. and they didn't say anything about a leak. The o2 sensor wasn't new. The CEL is on, I haven't checked codes using the list on this site yet. I'm pretty sure all the sensors are in place...
I have NO IDEA what ECU I have! I know that there is a sticker on the side of it..

EDIT: The car was converted from auto to manuel as well. Here's the ECU that is in the car.

EDIT: I was just reading the FAQ's and my ECU is for an auto(A51)
How do I convert this ECU to Manuel? I read how to do other ECU's but didn't see how to do a P75.

Even before you posted this question, your first thought should have been to pull the CEL codes. That right there will give you a good idea as to what is going on.

OK, I just pulled the codes...Well, code. It was a 6--Water Temp Sensor

Is it suppose to give more than one code at a time?
This wouldn't cause my problem..

yes, if there is more than one code it will flash them off on sequence. Then repeat them in that sequence. N i agree, a water temp sensor wouldnt cause your problems.

Is there a cat on the car? That could explain the bad gas smell if there isnt one.

Yes, there is a cat. The car HAS to be running really rich.
I took the battery cable off and ran codes again, all I'm getting is a 6.

sorry for the ignorance....

but are you sure its a code 6?

or is it code 61?

i would explain how to read obd1 codes, but theyre stickied on h-t.

and also, im sure youre not stupid or anything.

just thought i might check since code 61 has something to do with the o2 sensor.

It was deff. six short flashes, a pause, six short flashes, a pause, etc.

If it were a 61 would it have been six short flashes, a pause, one flash, a pause, repeat?

6 long flashes and a short flash would be 61. Then it would repeat. Bump for answer.

Okay..
I changed the cap, rotor, plugs, wires and the water temp sensor...

Seems to be doing the same thing. I drove it and it might not be as bad of an exhaust smell, but it is still there. I'm still getting the CEL 6, after pulling the ECU fuse to reset.
The plugs were WAY out of gap, a nasty *** black and two weren't even that tight.. Cap had a bit of corrosion on the contacts, but not all that bad.
I have the ECU out of the car now and it is deff. for an auto and hasn't been converted.

water temp? Temp not up to range or what ever, can create an Open loop, making it run rich. Keeping the car in warm up mode(rich). Something to think about, but fix the cell problem first.

just a quick question. Is it gutless? are you blowing white smoke? hows the oil? milky?

im sure you know what im getting at. Burnt coolant doesnt smell pretty, and with the need of a tune along with a cracked head, your mileage could be pretty poor.

thats weird my swapped b20b was giving me the same issues. Unfortunatlly i sold the car before i could fix the problems. It was running without an o2 sensor, and was running very rich, and ate gas like no other, plugs were BLACK as death and there was black smoke coming from my exhaust (dc header, to cat, to resonator, to stealth muffler). I know my friend who i sold the car to put in a chipped ecu for b20 maps, but said it was still running rich. Ill hit him up and see if hes gotten any change.

When you say you replaced the water temperature sensor, what did you replace? Because there are actually three 'sensors' on the engine that could be considered the water temperature sensor. One is the radiator fan thermoswitch on the thermostat housing. The other is the temperature gauge pickup on the head below the distributer. And the other is the coolant temperature sensor, also on the head below the distributer. If you have a code 6, then it is the coolant temperature sensor that needs to be replaced, not either of the other two. The coolant temperature sensor can be differentiated from the temperature gauge pickup by the fact that it has a TWO wire plug, while the temperature gauge pickup only has ONE wire going to it.

I replaced the one in the thermostat housing...
I can get the other sensor from my buddies old engine. i know they are all good. I thought the sensor that's throwing the code was the one in the thermostat housing. I'll change the other two and see if it makes a difference.
