Bad Distributor housing on Civic VX

My mechanic recently checked out my 92 hatchback and mentioned that I'd need to replace the distributor housing. I decided I ought to save the $100 he wanted to charge for installation and try it on my own.

I took it home, replaced the cap and rotor, and the car has not had any problems missing since (before it would suddenly turn off at low RPM).

The Distributor had oil inside of it (which is why my mechanic thought we ought to replace the housing). Can I get away with changing the Cap & rotor every year, or will this distributor problem catch up with me?

I love this care (and hate that my wife drives it). It only has 135k on it--I think we'll own it for at least another 2 years (she wants a newer car).

Well, I paid way to much for the housing ($320 for honda part), and now the guy won't take it back for a refund (never was opened) because it is an electrical part. What am I supposed to do with an over-priced part I don't need?

Is this typical?
