bad clutch
Its never happened to me b4, thats why I'm asking.
How do I know if I have a bad clutch?, I was doing some power runs, suddenly, I couldnt engage any gear. I was stuck in neutral. I had to pull over, and put it in gear and then start the car, it was still hard to change gears. sometimes grinding, while I tried to force it in.
By the time I got home I couldn't even go into any gear at all. I would turn off the car, put it in gear and start, and car would jerk(even when I held clutch down).
Did I loose my clutch(which my friend said I did) or is there some other mechanism possibly damaged b4 clutch. My friend said there is no cable between pedal and clutch, that its just the hydraulics?. I'm not so knowledgeable about that part of the drivetrain, any ideas of possible problem? Oh, and my clutch fluid is topped ok.
Also if its clutch, whats a good racing clutch to go with?.(I've been running the original factory clutch).b18C5

Re: bad clutch (dexy)
Sounds like the clutch is shot.

If you can put the car in gear when it's off, but not when it's started, often times it's signs of a bad clutch.

There is only hydraulics with your clutch, no cable. Hence why you have clutch fluid..
For a new clutch look at ACT, Clutchmasters, Exedy...I"m sure there are some threads around here about which clutches people have used and liked. Good luck.

Re: bad clutch (******)
thanks, thats what it seems to be, I'm gonna find out at shop. Some other people were suggesting pressure plate, or damping springs. I guess I'm wondering say when someone gets a new clutch(what comes in the package) is it just the clutch plate itself, or the whole system(i.e what does the package comprise)?

Re: bad clutch (dexy)
my question is? is it possible for a clutch to just all of a sudden give up and go bad. or is it something that you would def notice before going bad... i had a clutch go bad on my old escort but i knew it was going bad there were signs of it.
I just had the same thing happen to my car. The clutch is a Clutchmaster stage 3 clutch and its only got about 20,000 miles on it if that.. might even be closer to 10,000 miles and honestly most of that was easy driving i havn't raced my car in over a year no drag runs and i don't really ever road race.. just some hard shifting on on ramps and in city driving.
I drove it home the other night and about one mile from my house i noticed that going into a gear was harder than usuall i only shifted one more time into reverse and then back to first while paralell parking and i got up in the morning and the car won't shift at all whatesoever while the car is running..

Re: bad clutch (punku10)
yea that is same thing that happened to me, Although in mine, I just had a power pull with my friends TL, after that I could hardly go back into gear, by the time I got home, I had to push into garage.
I just spoke with my shop mech, he's like it should be the master/slave cylinder faliure(i.e i should check that first). He said just sit in car and depress clutch back and forth, while someone looks to see if the cylinder is moving or something like that, I gatta check when I get home. I had to bum a ride to work today. Too bad when ur car all of sudden fails on u.

These are two other things to check also. Check under the dash where the master cylinder comes through the firewall, check for oil and grease that is in excess there. Also check the slave cylinder that is mounted to the front of the tranny. If either of these fail, it can cause the same symptoms.
As far as a clutch kit goes, when you buy one they will come with 5 things.
- Clutch disk
- Pressure plate
- Throwout bearing
- Pilot bearing
- Clutch alignment tool
Make sure if you do replace the clutch that you resurface the flywheel if you're not replacing it.

It depends on which you go with. Some are just the pressure plate and clutch disk. Other's come with everything (pressure plate, clutch disk, throw-out-bearing, pilot bearing, and alignment tool).
Is the motor stock, or what upgrades?

This is a good clutch and can handle upgrades to your motor.
