Default bad alternator?

after changing my head my battery drains while sitting i fully charge it with my charger and if i disconnect the battery it stays charged if i constantly run it also stays charged but if its connected and sits more then an hour its dead i just went to check the alternator wires after sitting for 3 hours and my alternator is so hot i cant touch it....i disconnected the battery and will replace the alternator but was wondering if there is something on hondas that will cause it to drain the battery while not running as i dont want to burn up a new alternator

Might help to know what make, year, engine? But i had the same thing happen to my b18b1. Alternators voltage regulator went out and killed my optima and had to change out the alternator. Easy check go to local auto store (advanced auto etc) and get your alt. checked. I have rebuilt alt. before and the copper wiring inside can short out and make contact with each other which can be a factor for overheating and draining your battery. (aka completing a circuit) Also check your wiring, could have a damaged wire or melted one if you alt. is getting red hot. Good luck

The power wire within the alternator is grounding out. This causes the alternator itself to heat up. Replace it ASAP.
