b20z, b16 head or my 14b turbo kit ?
After my b18a1 blew up about 2 weeks ago, I dropped in a b20z with 27k miles. Right now I am at a really tough decision on whether I should put a vtec head on it or to put on my 14b turbo kit.
Turbo:
The kit is a home made one, FMIC, dsm 450's, custom downpipe, hks ssq bov, dsm 14b turbo, b-series manifold w/ dsm flange, oil lines, charge pipes, but no fuel managment setup yet. If I do use this it will be only 8psi, using the stock internal wastegate.
Vtec head:
B16 head, type r cams, stock gears and internals....I would use the stock internals of the block, b20z pistons ect.
My goal:
to break 12's and to be a reliable daily driver. Im thinking with the 14b at only 8psi I would only make maybe 220 whp or something around there, what do you think? Right now I am leaning towards selling the turbo kit and buying a vtec head because I feel that its more reliable and can break 12s with the right stuff. If this is in the wrong section mods feel free to move.

Turbo if you have the chance. More room for improvement and tuning. You can always go with a bigger turbo if you build your motor. NA is different. You get to a point and that's your motor's max output.

turbo makes more power than V-TAK.
reliability really isnt an issue, especially running a 14b at 8psi.
just dont be retarded (read - get good fuel managment)

Well does anyone have any idea how much power a b20z is going to make with a 14b turbo at 8psi? Will that even break 12s? Ive just read so many threads about b20s cracking sleeves and im kinda worried about going turbo on this motor. So far it looks like turbo is recommended..

i had a b20z bone stock longblock in a ek hatch, with a drag gen3 kit. went 240whp on 7psi.. went 13.04 at 110, on azenis. put 8k on the motor while turbo, before i put in my piston/rod built ls motor. motor ran flawless, it was my daily. thing was a torque monster, i think it made almost the same torque as hp. just make sure u put in some ls 5speed cams, the auto cams suck ***. and keep the boost down on a decent tune, and those paper thin sleves should hold up just fine, mine did. no franky setup is going to get you those numbers, go with the boost, that 14b should be fine for the power the motor will make, as long as its intercooled. it wont make quite the numbers mine did, but should be close.

Thanks for all the comments turbo wise, I would like to get some feedback from people that have or had a b20z with a b16 head. What kind of numbers/ times should I expect? I am trying to do alot of research before I decide.

i have seen dyno's with numbers ranging from like 160-175 on stock stuff!
I had a b20/vtec turbo setup, loved it! I am just running a b20 now...but..turbo it and save for the head later! Thats what i am doing!

aviod piston melt down, get a good fuel system (pump, fmu, maybe even a rail) and a igniton system. I have only head good stuff about the b20z block with boost at good levels.

all u need is a missing link, rising rate fmu 10:1, and a fuel pump, either inline, or a 255 intank. this is all the drag kits come with and the tune on the dyno was like 12.0-12.20 afr while in boost. all with stock injectors, fuel pressure reg, rail, etc. if u only are going to be 7-8 psi thats all u need, just put the base timing back like 3-4 degrees from stock, and call it a day. its a very simple, cost effective setup, and best of all it works. she will be a beast.

don't waste your money with an fmu, save and get it tuned on a wideband. read up on hondata or if you don't have the ca$h, uberdata and crome. then get it tuned correctly and have it run better and safer
goodluck and happy boosting
