b20 vtec building help
I'm helping my cousin build his b20 vtec, and I don't know too much about it. I'm using to working on the sr20 so my knowledge is crap when it comes to honda's.
My cousin has a 97 civic coupe ex. I already have a gsr head and a b20z block. The tranny is a b16 hydro tranny with a ls 5th gear. I also bought arp head studs for the gsr head and the ls/vtec kit from gilman honda. I think the ecu we will be running is a chipped p72. Is there anything else I need. Feel free to chime in please.
Also is this a direct drop in or will I need certain motor and tranny mounts. and he is wanting to spray so what type of pistons/rods/sleeve should I be looking to have done so it won't blow up on us.

you will need 99-00 Si Mounts for a 96-00 Ex, Hx, Lx, Dx.
You will need to Tq the ARP head studs to 22-36-70
Use a GSR Water pump & Timing Belt
Change the Dowl pins
Make sure you have a big Oil line for the Vtec
Plug the Oil Passage on the Head. There is No Oil passage on the block.

So do you mean that if i use B16 head, i have to use B16 timing belt and water pump?
do i need to change the oil pump?
why do most people use B18 type r belt, water pump, and oil pump?

As long as you use the same timing belt and water pump you will be good. Dont mismatch them at all. They will have a different tooth count and wont match up. Example: B16 Timing and GSR water pump wont work. But a B16 Timing belt with a B16 water pump will. Now this works for all B-series belts and pumps if they are the same.
I didnt change out my Oil pump on my built B20vtec. But it is Best. The GSR & TypeR pumps are Vtec pumps and Flow better. But Not a must. Now the Gear that is on the crank is the same as any other B-series so you dont have to worry about it.

Re: (fracas)
upgrading to a vtec oil pump is a good idea since you'll have everything apart anyway.
and you cant use a b16 timing belt because it's too short. you can use any other vtec belt if using a vtec pump. non vtec belt with non vtec pump. all b series vtec water pumps are the same and have a 22 tooth count. same with non vtec pumps only they have 19 teeth.

1- JE 10.5:1 pistons, stock bore
2- eagle rods
3- gasket
4- ARP studs
5- block gaurd
i'll be reving it like 8500-9000.... and will spray like 150 shots

You are wrong Sir. Ive used B16 timing belts more than once. As long as you have the Same timing belt and water pump you will be fine. And it is True you can yse Non-vtec timing belts and Water pumps.

you have used b16 timing belts with b18 blocks? i would love to see that.

ok wtf are you talking about? the original question is about a b20vtec. b20 and b18 blocks are both taller than b16 blocks. so a b16 belt would not work.
also, you said...

which is half wrong half right. all b series vtec pumps are the same 22 tooth unit and are interchangeable between blocks. so a b16 belt and gsr pump would work, if used on a b16 block. anything else and the b16 belt is too short.

only rev as high as the cams will make power too. i wouldnt be comfortable with revving that high unless the crank was balanced and polished as well.
that's a lot of spray for the stock sleeves. tone it down to a 75 or 50 shot if you must spray.

Re: b20 vtec building help (17)
I had a b20 vtec swpap and right now I have ls vtec. Make sure to plug the oil plug and use a large oil line for vtec. ground the vtec to the tranny. Make sure the head sits on the block correctly or else your going to have a major oil leak.

i think you meant 150 shot of nitrous right?
motor will hold for a bit, but it will eventually go, sorry to break it to you.
