Default B20 knocking when cold

To preface this, this is a question regarding my buddie's CRV, but since 1) the Truck and SUV forum is scant at best, and 2) many of you guys are familiar with B18/B20s, I find this relevant here. Moving along...

He says he hears the engine knocking whenever it's cold out, maybe around 40*F or so, but only when starting it up. After running and getting up to temp, the knock goes away (timing related I would infer). Additionally, whenever starting the engine when warmer out, it won't knock, nor will it knock at all when driving. The '99 CRV is stock, 133k miles or so. Anybody with some ideas or insight?

change oil and maybe try a thinner grade when it's cold out.

yeah, sicky has the right idea. oil grade should relate to the weather. 5w-30 is good for all year long, down here. but in those temps, thinner is better. good luck
