Default b18c5 (atuo) for del sol for my mom

Well My mom is going to get rid of her 93 oldsmobile cutlass supreme 3.4 l and that car sucks the engine is a b*tch and the car always has something going wrong...so she is going to get a del sol with alot of miles and wants me to pick an engien to put in it like my civic so i said ok. So here is what I was think help me out. I got a del sol (it has to be a del sol with targ top and I know how to fix the leaks) It will have itr 5 lug conversion and (mc and pv upgrades Brake booster) and a stock b18c5 motor to go in it but it has to be an auto tranny. So this is my problem. What tranny can bolt up to a b18c5 because all b18c5s were 5 speed correct....so can i bolt an auto gsr up to it?

Here is the setup one more time will this all work
itr 5 lug conversion
b18c5 motor
gsr auto tranny or ls auto tranny (which would be better)

please give me feed back i want my mom to have a nice smooth car with no problems she deserves it. And what shocks would give a smoother ride should I stick with stock itr? This car isnt for racing it just a fun car to drive to beach and to work and easier for me to work on then the stupid oldsmobile cutlass.
Thanks

DEF

Any B series tranny I believe. Does it really have to be auto? That kinda sucks. lol

How about a hydraulic LS tranny? How about a straight LS or CRV? Cheaper, and pretty torquey. Auto VTEC Just out of curiosity, why the 5 lug conversion?

Yea, I really don't understand 5 lugs all together. It's JDM y0. JDM in my opinion is just like rice. I suppose it's the whole ice cream theory. But still, when you think about it you're wasting your money on exterior parts when you could be making performance.

I cant picture a mom having a del sol with a c5 motor as her daily driver
Is she into to that stuff?

i wouldn't get an auto ls tranny, that engine will rip it apart. get a jdm auto gsr tranny and ecu. i think you also might need an auto B16A intake manifold, since theres some stuff for the auto on there. get OBD I everything, including the Del Slo, it should go pretty smooth. and id lose the 5-lug idea, no sense in that unless she wants the bigger brakes, since the car will be pretty quick.

why not just get a full b18c1 swap with auto?, chances are the non-lsd gsr tranny will have problems with the c5 as well.
and does your mom have a phone number i can reach her at

Talk to Tom (b18c5-eh2). I know he has experience with his shop doing an auto b series swap. Frm what I remember, he said it wasn't worth the trouble. Lots of crazy wiring and mount issues. I'm not trying to dissuade you, but be wary that this isn't just simple affair..

A couple more points...

First, a GSR auto tranny and an LS auto tranny are the same exact thing. They have the same gear ratios and everything.

Second, do you think your mom will appreciate all this stuff that you're putting on her car? 5 lug? Does she even know the difference between the stock set up and the extra lug that you want on her car?

I mean, you want her to have a nice smooth ride, why don't you just convince her to get an RSX or something. A car with a warranty will be much more appreciated than a "JDM'd" out Del Sol.

waste of B18C5 and waste of 5 lug...IMO.

Like others have said...get an auto GSR swap and maybe some bigger stompers like GSR brakes. That should be plenty.

i agree with fowler. you can run into the same amount of problems with a hybrid. what she needs is a warrenty that will repair anything that goes wrong. that would certainly not be any del sol with a swap, even if u get the car from a dealer. IMO get her a lease on a new accord its quick, smooth, and will last for a long time.

Get an auto B18B. She doesn't need a motor with VTEC as she won't be running it up to 6k rpms very often...will she? AnLS will push the Sol along just fine.

Simply put, doing a 5-lug on the car is a stupid, stupid idea. Huge waste...unless you're thinking of building your mother a sick track car and then stealing it on the weekends. If that were the case, I'd say teach the mommy how to drive stick and have at it

If this is your moms daily driver is the del sol even a practical choice? Also, enough other people have commented on the b18c5 auto and 5-lug idea. If it were my mom, and I were in charge of making the decision. I would probably do the following :

- high mileage 5g or 6G civ (either EX or LX for features)
- Good tune-up w/aftermarket rotors/pads (no big brake stuff)
- Either swap in a fresh d-series, or save for auto b18b

well thats why im throwing a question. My mom to things are she wants a del sol i she likes the car and she wants one with low mileage and that is not easy to find around here. She always wants something with a little power to it. I figure 5 lug for great stopping power that oem reliability. Now once the engine is in and running I dont plan on running inot many problems. I 30000 miles engine that is rebuilt to factory specs usually doesnt have problems. I'll just talk to tom.

Thanks for pointing me in some directions and posting your concerns.

First of all, aren't all GSR's manual trannies. None of them are auto i don't think. And what ecu would you run. I can't really think of one auto ecu to run with a B18c5. There are too many complications that you will run into in my mind. Not to get you discouraged at all, but I just didn't want you to run into a bunch of problems after buying all those goodies.

JDM auto B-series are available - probably not the Type R's though, but a GSR for sure......

Good to know. Thanks Steve. But how hard would it be to find one with the ecu.

one of my friends got 3 b16 auto swaps for cheap and tried putting it in his auto crx but they had to get a (tcm)transmission control module and they ended up just switching the car to stick because they could not get the jdm tranny wired up right

I told him all of this in an IM, but for anyone else reading please know this:

My shop has done a complete auto LS swap into a 1997 Civic 4-door.

IT SUCKS.

First of all the auto B-Series trannies are way bigger than the manual trannies. This makes it necessary to trim away from the actual frame/unibody which IMO is ghetto, but the customer insisted and we told him no warranty on the work.

Mounts will have to be fabricated as well. Again we made some mounts (ugly, but strong) and again I think it's ghetto bullshit.

The biggest problem with the entire thing is the wiring and ECU choice. For some reason there's no way to get rid of the tranny CEL. This means you fail emissions in GA with the OBD2 scanner, plus the engine itself runs in limp mode for some reason. We've tried all sorts of ECU combos but nothing worked. The auto LS ECU did not work, a CR-V FF ECU did not work, the Civic ECU doesn't work - nothing works like factory.

...and we aren't even talking VTEC either. This is just an LS swap.

Add in the troubles of VTEC and you'd have a really slow, shitty-running B18C5 with a slushbox - I'm sorry but that idea is just too complex and honestly the car would be slow.

To anyone contemplating an automatic B-Series swap into any Civic/Del Sol:

DON'T.

Either teach her how to drive a stick or get a nice D16Z6 SOHC VTEC swap with an automatic.

Why in the hell does your Mom need a B18C5? Seriously? The B18C5 has a very narrow powerband (read 7000rpm-8000rpm to make the peak power) so she'd probably never even utilize the motor's sweetspot anyways.

Lastly the brakes:

1994-2001 Integra front spindles with a 1991 Civic EX 4-dppr master cylinder and the car will stop fine.

Why would your Mom need a 5-lug conversion for the brakes? Really the 5-lug is more for bling than brakes.

Sounds to me like you just want to inherit this car from her when she's tired of it.

im not sure its gonna fit......but im not sure iwth the delsols if it has the little hump thing on the passenger side frame that the tranny goes underneath.....you can force the tranny to go in and bolt up but i wouldnt wanna do that cuz the axels might fall out check in an automatic integ on the passengerside first.....rite on the frame.... and look at a delsol frame also
