B18C1 in 97 Civic Hatch
My valve guide seal are leaking. So while Im getting the problem fixed I want to go ahead and put hi-performance valves, springs, retainers, etc. For this partiular engine would be better to go with high compression or low compression valves. Oversized or no? Any advice greatly appreciated!

Stock size is plenty big enough. Concentrate on friction reduction.

first of all send off your head to the machine shop (good one). So you get the proper work done. 3angle valve job, check and replace the vavle guides if needed. What's the milage on that motor anyways.
With the vavles it's up to you (I don't know what c1 comes with stock, concave? or flat top?), boost no boost? |

Engine has about 65k miles on it. No boost on the engine.

Are you sure that's the valve seals? |
Re: B18C1 in 97 Civic Hatch (ABK)
Every mechanic I have talked to said thats what it sounds like the problem is. How can I tell for sure?

Re: B18C1 in 97 Civic Hatch (nosturbo)
do a compression test, leak down test. See if it's not the headgasket or rings.
With 65,000 miles it's way to early to have valve seals replaced. Unless you were reving the living shit out that motor for long periods of time. |
Re: B18C1 in 97 Civic Hatch (ABK)
If I dont have the tools to do those tests, are there anythings to look for that might point to the rings or head gasket? On another posting I saw something about oil in the coolant meant the head gasket was bad. Is this true?

Re: B18C1 in 97 Civic Hatch (nosturbo)
yep if you got oil in your coolant, or you are burning coolant it is your headgasket
did you have overheating problems yet? Just rent a compression tester from autozone if they rent it. If not it's like $20. I just can't believe that valve guide seals went that fast. |
Re: B18C1 in 97 Civic Hatch (ABK)
If no oil in coolant, how do I know if its the rings? How do I know what the compression tester should read?
|
dose your exhaust have a color or smell to it?
|
i bought a compression gauge, voltmeter, timing light, and vaccum gauge tuneup set for $40. aint that expensive

If you are getting a crappy comperssion, drop couple of drops of oil into a cylider and see if goes up. If it goes up then you got bad rings. |
Re: (dantastic)
where did you buy the kit at?

Re: (honda head)
it smells like a weed eater. like a gas/oil mixture engine.
