Icon2 b18b1 rebuild advice

Whats up fellas.

A little back ground before I start. A buddy and I picked up a minty EG coupe shell for a weekend track car. For the motor we have choose a b18b1 that we pulled from a junker. We plan on doing a rebuild on this motor but want to know how were looking from where we are. We have pulled the head from the motor and snapped a few pics. Were thinking block guard/new pistons (if they can't be saved?) machine shop to clean the walls/gaskets clean the valves/gaskets in the head and roll with it. I know its a shitty post Suggestions?

if you rub your fingers down the walls are there any deep scratchs?

I would pull the pistons, and head down to a machine shop and have them take a look at the block and the head.

What's your budget as far as internals go? Ls/vtec or keep it non vtec?

Don't bother will a block guard.

Thanks for your reply. The walls that the pistons are down on don't have any deep scratches from what i feel. I notice the sorta "wave" feeling people describe.

As of right now we are going non-vtec. Don't see a need we plan on boosting it unless you differ on opinion?

Budget is being split 50/50. We dont want a 5 grand motor but we want a solid LS block. Lets go with 600-1200

No blockguard? Any reasons why?

Can you catch your finger nails on anything?

if I were to go non vtec I'd pick up a P8R head and a good set of cams and valve train.

Take a look at RS machine pistons, and try to run the stock rods if possible. but don't forget ARP rod bolts.

Block guards do noithing. There pointless.

Don't forget, you have to pay to play, and noithing comes cheap.

But deffinetly check out the market place. You'd be suprised on the amount of deals that are on there. My buddy picked up brand new Arais pistons for $200!

Besides the obvious rust I don't recall catching my finger on anything tho the block isn't infront of me at this moment it's in our work garage.

What are we looking at in a ballpark figure for a machine shop to take care of what we need done?

Were not totaly opposed to Vtec but we thought we could save some money and not really sacrifice alot of power either.

When I was doing a turbo in my d16a6 the blockguards were all the rave. Ive been out of the game for a bit tho. Buddy and I got a wild hair up our *** and decided to do this.

So far we have come across good deals. We have a solid eg coupe shell that just needs a motor and trans and a b18 for a great price. We dont mind spending the money where it counts.

I have to wait to get this account off of trial to use the marketplace. I have bought a ton of stuff from here and HMT back in 09.

Also I guess it goes without saying those pistons/valves are done?

I definitely would not reuse them. I would just go ahead with new parts while it is easier to replace them now than it would be later down the road.

Agreed. We were just unsure if the pistons/valves were actually done or just needed cleaned up at a machine shop.

It wasn't mentioned before (maybe it was) but we are planning on going turbo. Anything we defiantly should do to make it reliable under boost while we have it tore down. Theres really no time limit on the build we would like to have it out at least by next spring

honeing a block shouldn't be that much at all. But it can vary shop to shop, and where you live.

How much HP would you like to make?

Were not really shooting for a number per say. We would like low 12's possibly 11's.

Were about a hour outside DC/Baltimore area.
