b18b swap or d16y8...help with my options please...
Hi guys...i am really undecisive right now..on my options....I am torn between getting an 01 b18b engine with 16,000 miles on it..or going with a greddy turbo kit on my d16y8 with 45,000 miles on it....i know with the swap..i would be a lot slower than my turboed d16y8..but i will have more potential with it later....i just can't decide right now..i need a little help on opinions...what i am really looking for is everyone's response to either...i already know the b18 has good low and midrange torque..but is there anything else..like good stock 1/4 mile times....This is going into a 00 civic coupe..if you guyz are wondering..my current 1/4 time is a 16.4 with the d16y8 i/h/e...let me know guys...b18b or boost the damn d16....
Khoi
P.S i only have money to do one thing right now..its either b18b swap or boost the d16....and mods dont' end whether i go d16 or b18b..there's always room to upgrade....

depends on how much u getting the swap for. also, if it was me....i would boost for now and when the day comes that i get totally bored, i would swap and just get a different manifold for the turbo to fit the new engine. But thats' me

swap it then later boost the LS
ive beaten 3 civic sohc's with that greddy turbo kit. not impressed at all
swap would be more reliable

ok....maybe a greddy turbo d16 may be fast, but what kind of times are you planning to run? you may be impressed from the non boosted motor but i think youll be more happier with B18. I was faced with the same proposition and i went with the b18b. i drove my friends LS hatch and then i drove the turboed D16. I was more impressed with the B motor. Turbo is cool and i wouldnt mind turboing my LS though. think about the LONG run

Lots to consider in your choice. I myself am building a D16y8 running a Z6 head for turbo. When you swap a motor...there are lots of little things most people dont mention until you actually buy the engine, the same thing will happen for a turbo car, but at least you already have the engine. Boosting the DOHC later would be great. More expensive, but it would produce real power(assuming you have it tuned well). Nice thing about the D16y8, its smaller than the B18b. that means its going to obviously weigh somewhat less. Add a turbo and you could be very fast. Thing is, the greddy kit is conveinent, it gets you going, but its not what you need. Best to keep saving and buy your parts seperate. chances are you'll find deals from people or shops and put together a potent package. I'm putting my engine in a EG hatch and i know at 10psi it runs 12.7 with some basic tunning. Ive seen it done, Ive seen the set up with higher boost run 12.6 in a fullinterior w/stereo 4door. But then again, ive seen DOHC cars run times just as good. I'd suggest getting out some paper and a calculater, write down everything(the smallest details!!!) you have to do for each swap. add it up, spread it out over time, and make a decision. Good luck.
