Re: b18b only 145 hp?? (92civicx)
It's the torque, low compression, and displacement that make the motor worthwhile.
Not the power out of the box. Though it's a fun motor in stock form with the ls tranny or especially with shorter gearing.

Hellz yeah.
@ OP:
You're probably thinking of the GSR (B18C1) that makes 180hp.
The LS is nice because it's torquey which makes it a good daily driver and low compression so you can run 87 octane gas in it and they make totally awesome boost motors .

I definately have to agree with Syndacate. I had a 92 GS Integra and I boosted it with a T3/T4 turbo running consistantly at 12 psi. The bottom end never let loose. I DID however have a ZDyne Gold ECU and 390 cc injectors. I loved that car and the reliability of the B18A1 with the turbo on it made it one of my favs. I layed down 268 WHP and 223 TQ at 10 psi and that's pretty decent for a stock bottom'd motor. I would love to drop an LS motor in my 92 4 door with a GSR tranny. But I already have the D15B VTEC and it'll go in. I'll keep everyone posted on that one...

Re: (KhanhCord)
I love the Ls in my hatch, had it for almost 8yrs of beating. The rods are great, it is the rod bolts that stretch and fail...which from what I hear takes quite a bit of boost. Throw some arp s in there and feel confident.

yup, but can still handle higher boost levels stock then a b16. ls just don't like to be rev'd high if it stock. build the ls and u'll be very happy. b16's are not great for boost but are better then boosting it's bigger brother the b17. you don't need vtec if u turn the boost up

Uhhh...what?
Yeah, but even when you're referring to JDM engines, when you come to the B18C series it's better to put a number at the end of it, or you have people dangling and wondering "is it a GSR or an ITR?" - - So you can put like B18C(R) or some stupid crap like that, or just put it as a "JDM B18C1" - it's got notational purposes online .

b16 compression = ~10.5
b18b compression = 8.5
You can boost more because you can retard timing more.
But you do have a valid point.

B18B = 9.0 c/r
B16A = 10.2 c/r
So it's not that extreme of a difference, plus it is mostly offset by the geometry of the rotating assembly. Pistons speeds are slower in the B16, which eliminates pressure spikes & counteracts detonation. R/S ratio is substantially better, increasing combustion dwell time/efficiency which lets you either run leaner or lower octanes, or not have to retard as much.
