Re: B18 Timing Issue/Question "Where to line up marks"
YES! after googling, yahoo-ing, photobucket-ing, imageshack-ing for quite some time,
i finally found something as close as i can!

as you can see the intake valve is open(down) and the springs have tension on them

its going to be hard.
this one of those "try and error" things.
but like i stated earlier, it saves you time and frustration by just removing the valve cover.
and your new gasket is re-usable since its still very much new

okay so yeah its super rough...and won't idle...car tuns off right away when i take the foot off the gas...any ideas where i can start looking at aside from the timing (cause as long as the car turns on then i'm okay right??....i know you mentioned earlier, that it could be the MAP sensor?? what else?

just cuz the car turns on does not mean your car is ok.
are you throwing any codes?
and yes. check the map sensor.
could also be your head gasket

Re: B18 Timing Issue/Question "Where to line up marks"
i mean "okay" as far as the timing is concerned....but now that you mentioned it, i did see a tiny bit of oil leak. think from the head. Also I should note, it isn't too cold out, and I just put on a new air filter. I did get lots of (white?) smoke when i turned it on....but didn't throw any codes as far as I saw...but i shall check that again in the morn. I don't have a garage to work in and it's mad late.

white smoke?
yup. your head gasket is blown.
check your distributor also. it might be too low. try moving it and see if it idles.
but PLEASE, move it with the engine off. haha. either way it has to be off since it doesnt idle.

95 delsol Si with JDM b16a swap w/ stock p61 ECU (b17a gsr)
I blew my headgasket a while back, so I got the head milled, new headgasket etc. When i was bolting the intake cam carrier i noticed it was getting a lil hard to bolt down. Turns out i had the Dizzy 180*s from where it should be... so i fixed it and continued to torque down the carriers to OEM tq. specs.
anyways im getting a code 4 now and it idles very rough (think v8)... I tried rotating the distributor and if i bring it all the way towards the front of the car the idle gets better (still not good tho) and if i rotate it the other way the car will almost die instantly.
That makes me think i am off a tooth on the cam timing but i am almost positive the cam timing is set and tensioned correctly.
Can a code 4 cause a car to run that lopy? The dizzy worked fine before i changed the headgasket and i didnt even unplug it (i couldnt get the connector undone, so maybe wiring)
the car has NEVER thrown any codes the ENTIRE time i have owned it since 03 (until now) and it has NEVER had an 02 sensor (weird)...Now im getting code 1 (o2 which is expected) and code 4

Re: B18 Timing Issue/Question "Where to line up marks"
hey i dont know if this is old or not but to time a motor all u need to do is drop ur dip stick down number 1 piston and turn the pully untill engine is top dead center and then turn ur cam gear to where it says up and if its a dohc there is a mark on each side of cam just line them up and throw ur belt on and then just barley turn ur crank pully clock wise just enough to tighten front of belt but not moving cam gears, then tighten the tentioner and done its times but if its back firing still u are on wrong strok. all u need to do for that is lossen tentioner again and pull belt off cams and put dip stick down number one piston turn pull clock wise until piston goes down again and comes back up u will be on the other stroke then put ur belt back on cam gears and tighten tentioner how i explained to do it and done and for some reason still back firing then check ur firing order

Re: B18 Timing Issue/Question "Where to line up marks"
1. Why would you need to use a dipstick to measure TDC when the crank has a marking for it plus the lower timing belt cover AS WELL as the oil pump itself.
2. To line the cames get a flat straight edge and line up all the cam makes in 1 straight line using the straight edge as a guide.
3. How the hell can you tell if the thread is old or not. It clearly shows the month/day/year of the each post.

7 year old thread. I get that you're trying to help, bryce, but that's the shade tree mechanic way to do it. We generally promote doing things the actual, correct way around here. We also don't bump ancient, dead threads.
