i got a quote for an ls/vtec from a GOOD shop for around $4k installed. wouldn't imagine a crvtec to be much more. may even be less.

That is far beyond ridiculous. I don't care what the shop is or how "good" they are, 4k is insane unless it comes with a built head and lsd plus forged internals.
You already have the LS, buy the vtec head, a good conversion kit, and have at it. While you are at it, if you want more power, yank the bottom end too and have some B16 pistons put on the LS rods for more compression and make a bit more power. Either way, a B20 is a nice little setup to start out with but no point in buying one when you already have an LS.

ok, let me rephrase what i said. i got a quote for a ls/vtec with b16 pistons, arp rod bolts/headstuds, new timing belt, water pump, a vtec oil pump, and a b16 tranny. i don't think its unreasonable because of the amount of time to build it.
edit: forgot to mention a 6-puck act clutch and flywheel.

if i were u i would def just build the ls/vtec cause u already have the ls..... but get all the parts urself and then just bring it the shop to build.... im gathering all the parts for mine which total about $1600 plus about another 500-600 for labor and that included aftermarket piston and rods.. but not including water pump and belt so u can add that it

yeah wait till it blows up in your face. my 1.8 ls vtec setup made 217hp and 139tq. i only put 4700 into it. but thats me building it outta my garage. my old b20 vtec made 180hp and 138 tq stock block and stock head. lasted me 6 months and blew up from reod bolt stretch.
so if you gonna build any motor build up the bottom end with some oem or rs oem style pistons with some arp rod bolts and it should be fine
