b17a1 in a 98 civic ex - How make it obd2a to pass state inspection?
Hey everyone,
Any info on my 93 gsr motor and what I'd need to make it obd2a so it will pass state inspection. Any help figuring this out would be greatly appreciated. Thanks |

Technically it's against federal regulation to place an older engine in a newer chassis but electrically speaking you could still manage to get it to pass unless your state is a stickler for visual inspection (ie California). In NC as long as the ECU will connect to the machine and there are no check engine lights for 96up vehicles it'll pass. For OBD2A you could use an OBD2A P30 ECU from the Del Sol or use a P2T ECU from 99-00 Si (with adapter harness). You'll have to do the CKF bypass trick (google CKF bypass). You'll also need to reuse your EX injectors, source an OBD2 alternator for B series, and either use an OBD1-2 distributor adapter or find an OBD2 B series VTEC distributor. As for the EVAP purge I'm not sure maybe someone could chime in.

I'm in NH, and to hondapartshero I have not been able to find that del sol ecu anywhere, I heard that my motor is basically a stroked b16, I'm looking to put the b16b ctr head on it before I swap it.any difference in flow between the 99si head vs the ctr??

Re: b17a1 in a 98 civic ex - How make it obd2a to pass state inspection?
nothing...just better cams

Re: b17a1 in a 98 civic ex - How make it obd2a to pass state inspection?
the b17 has shorter rods than the b16, different pistons, the same cams as the 94-01 gsr
there was a earlier and later ctr/itr head and cams were different. they're good for boost, but they're not that much better than gsr cams. The intake valves were undercut IIRC, only giving a slight increase in flow, but still... Essentially, it's a b16 head with a very mild port job and better internals. For the money, I would get the b16 head ported and throw some supertech internals in and be able to flow more and have a like new head. As for the conversion, just swap the obd2 alternator, distributor and oil pump over (or get a new one). The OBD2 oil pump has the bosses for mounting the CKF sensor or whatever it is and it's cheaper than the OBD1 oil pump but mounts just fine as I have one on my '94 gsr block. The alternator can be rewired or get a conversion harness. For evap purge, you may need the obd2 or at least obd1 intake manifold or drill a hole and put a little nipple fitting in your manifold. Manifolds look different, so.... You're still left with an old motor going in a new car. That is still illegal. Why exactly year is so important, idk, but it's still the law. An old b17 is forbidden but a b18 or b20 is legal. Logic would dictate otherwise, but the law isn't logical. |
Re: b17a1 in a 98 civic ex - How make it obd2a to pass state inspection?
Yea the laws don't make sense, but I think if I can get all the electrical parts, intake manifold, distributor, and oil pump off a 98 del sol dohc vtec I should be all set and will pass inspection. I know it prob doesn't make any sense as to why I wana put a b17 in my 98 civic.

dude ill take that b17 alittle better then a b16 and able to keep traction better then a b18 its perfect.. altho I dont have emissions or inspections

Re: b17a1 in a 98 civic ex - How make it obd2a to pass state inspection?
I would trade my gsr for a b18c1 or ls/vtec.

I mean, I have a D16Y8 in my CRX, but that's because swapping in a B-series meant I'd have to change out my knuckles and brakes too (I have an '88 HF which has small brakes and knuckles that can't match with other axles; I'm also stuck with an '88 transmission ONLY until I swap all those parts). Plus I already had the Y8 and knew it's history back to 76,000 miles and the Y8 only took about $300, maybe a bit more, worth of parts to install, not including some tune up items. If a B-series swapped in just as easily as the D did, I would have gone with that. |
Re: b17a1 in a 98 civic ex - How make it obd2a to pass state inspection?
The. B17 has sentimental value to me cuz a very good friend of mine who got me into Honda's.years ago sold it to me and a few months later passed away and its something I knew he always wanted was to see it run. And only car I got to swap it in right now is a 98 civic ex coupe.

Re: b17a1 in a 98 civic ex - How make it obd2a to pass state inspection?
its possible to do u can swap it in run it off a si computer. u will need to do the crank sensor bypass or run the b16 oil pump so u can use the crank sensor. then use the b16 dizzy. u will need to run a b16 ecu which will need the obd2a-obd2b conversion harness. u can always swap it out and run a chipped p28 after u pass emissions. it will cost alil extra to swap it in a 98 civic

B17 on boost is the perfect of both worlds.. Tq and Hp
Where are you at OP? |
Re: b17a1 in a 98 civic ex - How make it obd2a to pass state inspection?
Just a question but does NH use the OBD2 connector to connect when doing the emissions test? If not then you have a ton more ECU options.

Anyone ever try running a dohc vtec. On a sohc vtec ecu??

Re: b17a1 in a 98 civic ex - How make it obd2a to pass state inspection?
If I can remember correctly I think they do plug into the obd2 port for state inspection but it really depends on the shop.

Re: b17a1 in a 98 civic ex - How make it obd2a to pass state inspection?
Hey first time on this but i have a question and this should be a good place to start. Im trying to figure out the steps or what i may need or should expect for the following full swap. I have a 2000 ex and i blew my engine what i wanted to do was go for a full swap instead of replacing the d16. I wanted to swap a b17a1. Should this be a clean swap or is there any opsticles i should look out for or would the better swap be the b18 motor with b16 tranny im just trying to get the most power i can get before i rebuild and or boost anything anyine coud help with anything is bette thann nothing. Thanks:)
