B16aSiR2, EK Hatch, Emissions, Illinois
What's up people. Just joined your wonderful site today..Must say, very informative. I've got a question & hopefully someone, anyone here can give me a straight answer..
So, quick & to the point. Picking up a 98 EK hatch (obd2) this weekend, she's got a B16aSiR2 (obd1) in her....... What can I do to pass emissions? I live in Illinois & the emissions place just plugs in, tests ya, then send you on your merry way. I just wanna be able to pass when the time comes.
Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance!!

Well, it's running OBD1 in an OBD2 vehicle is my issue I guess. I'm pretty sure it will not pass.. like 97.99%.. Soon as they plug it in, I'll have issues. Hellp?

What are the state regs regarding that? This is an international forum. Maybe you'd have additional luck if you posted in a regional forum. Unless you're asking how to get around the test then you may be on your own.

just convert to obd2 and run the appropriate ecu for it, a em1 ecu should work just fine, and make sure there are no check engine lights.

But with the car being a '98, the folks at the emissions place are going to want to plug in.. You don't think I'll have issues? It's not like the good ol days where they just suck your exhaust fumes in and pass or fail is based on that. I'm just trying to be proactive.

Em1 Ecu.. Is that the from a 99-00 Si?
Any idea on what else must be done for it to be compatible? Could I just run it for emissions purpose, then switch back to the one that's currently on there??

Does it have check engine light on? if not you should be fine...
like i said about my friend. he had check engine light on so he paid few hundreds to get it fixed and No more check engine light on so he went to emission and passed the test the same day when he got it fixed.

No, no lights on at all. Am I worried for nothing ya think?
I guess I have some ill feelings since my 92 hatch that had a b16 would never pass. Like, not even close.

You will need an OBD2 USDM B16 ECU (you could get away with an OBD2A GS-R or ITR ECU perhaps if you just wanted it for emissions testing.)
Ideal ECU is a '96 - '97 Del Sol VTEC ECU (P30) good luck finding one. Next choice is a '99 - '00 Si ECU (P2T) and a conversion harness. If using this ECU you will need to swap out the fuel tank for one with a fuel tank pressure switch. ('96 - '00 EX I believe, and IIRC all '99 - '00 Civics) you will in any case also need to make sure the secondary O2 sensor is there and working and you will need to perform the CKF trick shown here -> http://technet.ff-squad.com/ckftrick.htm
Make sure you don't buy a JDM OBD2 ECU, it will not communicate with the scan tool so it's an automatic failure.
