B16A2 and CA Smog?
I own a 97 Honda Civic HX and I've been thinking about swapping the engine. My dads being a real big **** head about swapping out the Engine. He's been saying that if I swap the engine out into a different one it wont pass California Smog Tests. So My question is, if I swap out the engine (which is currentley a 1.6L SOHC 4-Cyl) to a newer B16A2 would it still pass smog? Thanks for any help you guys can provide!

Should pass smog... I have many friends that done swaps (just like you're planning)...and they all passed smog... Even got approved and passed an inspeciton from the Ref.
I think your dad doesnt want to spend the money on a swap. But who really knows... LOL... But if done correctly, you should pass smog with no problem. Good Luck...

If you search on this site, you'll find a lot of stuff on the in's and out's and legallities of CA engine swaps.
The basics, as far as I understand them, are:
The engine has to be from a car the same year or newer than yours.
It has to be available in similar form in the US (if your buying a JDM engine)
ALL the smog equipment from that engine has to be in place and working.
I think that's it. For the basics. But there are a lot more details to the whole thing.
Just use the search feature here, and you'll learn way more than you wanted to

as long as it's done correctly, and seeing as how you are planning to swap in the b16a2 which is only found on the 99-00 si's, it should be legal. But you will have to get it BAR'd first before you are able to smog it. but BAR'ing is essentially a smog check but stricter.

since the 99-si motor will bolt in your only issue is the ecu. I believe the plugs are different at the ecu. you will either have to get a OBD2a to OBD2B jumper or I think you can use a 96-97 delsol dohc vtec ecu if using the stock civic harness. as for the swap I think you can use the 99-si engine harness and that should work but you will have to add the wires for the 2dn o2 sensor. also get the cat from the 99-si so it has the second O2 fitting on it.
