B16a Rebuild Question
Sup guys. I'm picking up a civic soon with a B16a that has blown rings in it. I've decided to rebuild the motor and would like some suggestions aside from what I already plan on doing to it. Please remember, I'm not looking for a fully built engine, I want it to be a nice DD with some *****.
The motor goes as is:
The Head
Getting machined, polished and *maybe* a 3-5 angle valve job
All new gaskets & seals
New water Pump
New oil pump
New timing belt
The Block
Getting it machined and cleaned
All new gaskets and seals
Install Block guard
New rings and CTR pistons
New Bearings all around Aftermarket or stock (whichever I find is cheaper and good to use)
Keep the rest on the block stock
The motor will be getting new motor mounts and a full tune up as well.
-Could i install the CTR pistons without any other problems? I know the compression will be raised and may need a tune but are there any other fitment issues?
-Are there any other suggestions/advice you guys have?

yes they will fit...you dont need a block guard tho since your not running boost...i would balance and blue print the block with the ctr pistons...no need to do a valve job(if you do go 3 angle no need for 5 angle) just a nice set of valves and springsand retainers, a nice set of stage 2 cams with gears and a good tune and your good to go...its a DD i wouldnt go crazy with it....or build it for a mild boost app and throw a turbo on it.....safe 10lbs and i think you will be happy

are you going turbo?
Instead of the angle job get a full port and polish maybe a 3 way valve job wouldnt hurt.
get it bored 50mm over CTR pistons would work no problem
.. Personally i would just get the head work and a mild compression ratio piston...you should think of the future maybe you might want to turn to F.I.

well for mine i wanted to get a garret turbo down the road and yeah i was gonna get eagle rods ctr pistons bored p.p. and sleeved later

i have ctr pistons in my b16a.. on the stock b16a rods. i had to have the small end of the rods machined a little to fit the pistons. its high compression. its got a little more power thru the entire rev range.. but still doesnt compare to a b18 torque..
oh, and use OEM honda bearings. they might not be cheaper, but you'll get a better fit. most aftermarket bearings only come standard (honda oem green) or slightly oversized and undersized. I'd stick with OEM and just plastigauge to get optimal clearances.

I got lucky with my b16a rebuild with ACL bearings. The clearances were within range, just not the same across the board. Next time I would go with oem to make the clearances equal.
I second the fact of not installing a block guard. Also if the block blew its rings there may be scratches or not. Rip it open to find out if you need to have a fresh hone.
If you get aftermarket cams check the lift on them to make sure you don't have valve to piston carnage.
Good luck. Sounds like a good DD, just sucks to fill up on 93 octane all the time.

Since the rings are blown I wanted to rebuild it so I could use it as a daily. I found this car and decided to get it. I already have an Rx-7 project that is taking all of my time and money. I really just want to use this car as a daily, I really didn't want to get too into the rebuild. (Meaning having to making custom modifications or custom tuning, was just looking to see if I could get a little more power while it's torn down)
And yes the block was going to get a fresh hone regardless of it's condition, along with the head work. I was going to do this so that I wouldn't have to worry about the head or the block later on down the road. Though there is no guarantee it will not break on me, I want to make sure I did it the best way possible to not have any worries
