Default B16A - CAI - Water?

I've just got my motor - Thank Pagong!!!

Yesterday when I was removing the stock engine, D15 , I noticed the air filter connected to my AEM CAI had some rust spots. So under the bumper it's getting wet. I've now removed the wheel-well covers, and might keep it that way, or at least for the summer. So I've decided to cut the CAI to keep the filter in the engine bay. I DO NOT want to risk hydro locking this engine.

Could I get anyones' opinion on this? Should I run some piping to get extra air into the filter, can I block off the piping in some way to protect water splashes? Remember, I live in Seattle. So I will need a good setup for the rain once the sun is done...

(BTW, I had the CAI on the D15 just for kicks, not for performance... )

mine was cut for the bypass valve...**** didn't work I hydro locked my vx motor

you can cut it like you said, and run dryer ducting to if for more air...or you can reuse your stock air box with a k&n drop in filter and use your aem piping instead of the rubber tube that comes stock. Thats what I'm running and it works great!!

so your running your stock airbox on the end of your AEM piping? minus the resonator of course? this works ok?

yes ma'am....stock box with no resonator piping what so ever, wtih a K&N drop in filter, no problems....feels the same as my aem short/cai and is quiet!!

since the air box still gets air from inside the engine bay you can extend the box openning through the same hole the cai goes through....thats what I did....works great!!

Hey Pat, if i were you leave the fender lining in place. I already Hydrolocked one b16 before and it wasnt pretty. I had my PRM CAI and it sucked the water like it was a straw.

What you can do is get like a flexible hose from homedepot and try to direct cold air from the front.

I have an SRI, Im planning on cutting out the front of the bumper (the black part on the SiR, just above the lip) running furnace hose up through and point it to my intake, This way cold air will flow direct from outside to my intake. My question, is there any way it will suck up water into the filter element this way? Will it be as good\better then an AEM CAI?

It won't be as good. If the whole piping is one piece connected to the throttle body then the intake suction will 'grab' more air. If their is a rigged piping, it will help, but not as well as an AEM CAI.

I loved the CAI, but seeing the rust spots on the filter makes me wonder where the f**k the water came from... Their were no gaps, must have traveled in between the fener cover and splashed upword...

I going to jimmy rig a home depot pipe like you and Pagong suggested, if it has a bend, no water should be able to travel a far distance.
