B16 vs B18 for autocross
I've seen the posts on the power output, cost etc for these, but what I really want to know is which engine is best suited for auto cross. I read somewhere that the B16 has an advantage here but didn't see why. If I go B16 I will def cough up the cash for a supercharger down the road, from what I've been told/read, the supercharger helps with the low end that the B16 is lacking until VTEC kicks in. NO FLAMING please, not debating full build ups, just a basic eng with add ons.
Also does anyone have exp with Earl Scheib paint jobs? I'm thinking of taking out some minor dings and getting my car reshot in a fresh coat of black. They have a special for the top stage 3 paint for 299.95 or something like that.
Thanks guys - and glad to be back, sup Spade and EG6Si!

Re: B16 vs B18 for autocross (RSZero1)
I guess it partially depends on what car you are putting the motor in and what type of racing you plan on doing, solo 1 vs. solo 2... I have the stock D16 in my hatch right now and can hold my own in solo2 but wouldn't stand a chance on a road course.

Just remember that a motor swap puts you in a different class, which may make you less competitive then you are now.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I do want some low end pull in lower RPM's, for power out of low speed turns, as far as which type of racing I'm still undecided but I was thinking of some type of roadcourse. Oh and my car is a EJ7, stock.

For auto-X you'd want a SOHC motor - seriously.
The quickest cars in the Atlanta area all have SOHC motors in them. We're talking a tight auto-X course here, not some road course.
For a full road course I'd say the B16A or the B18C1/B18C5, but we're talking auto-X.
What kind of car do you have right now? As Tony said the swap will class you differently, and in that case you'd be up against some really stiff comp more than likely.

Re: B16 vs B18 for autocross (B18C5-EH2)
Its a coupe HX stock. too many engine options, just when I thought i had decided? So the SOHC is better? Not my HX, I know i can do a mini me swap, is that better?

Your HX motor is probably as good or better than the EX motor - it already has VTEC and even a roller-follower cam system. I remember seeing a dyno of an i/h/e HX motor that put out more whp than a similiarly-equipped EX motor. Wish the search function didn't suck so bad!
It's your HX TRANNY that hinders performance so much.
...But if you swap trannies you might as well just do an engine swap. If this is your daily driver then'd I'd dop a swap. I'd buy a nice old CR-X or Civic hatch if I wanted a dedicated Auto-X car. Then I'd leave it virtually stock because once again swaps will class it totally different.
