Default b16 or b18

What motor whould you choose to go with if you had the option.. the b16 or the GSR. I know the GSR is bigger and I know it has a higher horse power but What is an all around better motor. B16 or GSR, and what makes it better. (Its going into a hatch)

depends what gsr you're referring to. the jdm b16a has the same as the usdm gsr. but then the jdm gsr has 10 more hp than both of them. what do you want to do? how much money are you willing to spend?

your best option is to search. there are tons of threads on this topic (unfortunately).

Neither.

B20 block/professionally ported b16 head.

I'd go for the GSR actually.

1.6l or 1.8l?

Hmm.. Not hating on the b16a2, I have one and love it. But the b18c1 is a better motor, imo.

Or you could do b18c1 block/b16a2 head. I plan on doing that.

If you put a b16 head on a GSR block it'd be called a poor mans type R... since the b18c5 is basically a GSR block with different pistons topped by a b16a head that's ported and has a more aggressive cam profile (among other differences).

It couldn't be an LS since it didn't start it's life in an LS/RS/GS and isn't a b18a/b block.

I have a jdm b16a, but I say go for the jdm GSR. You'll hate the lack of torque the b16 has stock.

and the extra 10-15 ft lbs the GSR engine has is going to make a whole lot of difference?

I've had both the B16 and the B18 and I would choose the the B18 anyday of the week.

IMO "bigger is better" I would go w/ the B18c1 + B16 Tranny. I don't like the IM on the GSR though so I would just get a B16 IM or Skunk 2.

b18 bro...who doesn't want the extra 10hp...get the jdm sir-g motor and you'll get 10hp compared to the usdm gsr and higher compression...also most sir-g motors should come with LSD...i think all of them do come with LSD but correct me if i'm wrong anybody...

i love my jdm gs-r. and i've had b16a2 with i/h/e and with all that it put 144/100 on the dyno. with my gs-r with just an intake and a tune to pull a little exra fuel with an afc it made 151/117. and that's only an intake with the stock dx exhaust restricting me witht the cat and al. not to mention the plethora of torque you FEEL in difference between the motors.
