I just swapped in a b16 in my hatch and i reversed the axles which made one side go in all the way and one side go in about an inch. I realized it was going in any further and pulled both out and inspected them. One azle had splines running down the whole length of the shaft that slides into the tranny and the other had splines on half of the shaft. I then switched the axles and put the one with half the splines in the driverside and put the one with the full splines on the passenger side.
Its kind of tricky to get the whole axle into the hole because itll go half way and then want to stop. Theres a lock ring thing on the end which makes it so popping the axle the rest of the way in slightly difficult. I used the good old push and shimmy techniqe. Itll just pop right in.
