Axle popped out - 94civic d16z6
Well as I was going down the highway the other day and my driver side axle popped out. I was going about 65ish when it came out. The motor just revved.
Here is the kicker.
The axle went back in a few seconds after it came out. It went back in for about a qtr mile and then came out again and I pulled to the side. It didn't really slam or jerk when it went back in.
So I got it towed back home and pulled the axle out and it sheared the splines on the very end. Well I plan to get a new axle this weekend and change the trans fluid. So my main question is did I F*** up the splines inside the diff?? Or are my hopes that the axle teeth would shear before the ones in the trans?

Logically you would think that since the splines on the axles were sheared that would mean that the splines on the diff were much harder and did not shear.
Of course breaking down the trans would tell the truth, but thats a bit of work so instead I would take a strong led light to it and maybe a magnifying glass and look inside in a well lighted area during the day and see what the splines would look like or I would just go for broke and install a new one and see what happens

Changing axles and changing transmission is a total different ball game.

Yea, I thought about looking up in there with a LED light earlier, but I had to leave and didn't get back till dark. But I will check tomorrow and see if I can see anything.

The diff is fine, i've done that before, it never does anything to the diff, those sheared splines at the very end of the axle wont hurt it either.

94EG8 - Thanks for the input.
Are you saying that I can re-use that axle?? Or are you just saying the sheared metal from the axle wont hurt it?? The axle will not stay seated in there, I put it in and was easily able to pull it right back out. Just slides in and out.
I believe the axle came out because the motor has a decent amount of play due to bad mounts and the wheel bearing on that side is bad. I was actually on my way back from picking up new mounts. And planned to install this weekend. I have a spare wheel assembly for the wheel bearing repair, so I don't have to press anything.
I procrastinated on both repairs and now has come to bite me in the ***!
